Fight For Your Right Nigerians!

EXTREME DOCILITY IS UNACCEPTABLE, DO SOMETHING!!!

In February this year, a colleague ordered for an iPhone as a valentine gift to his wife. On arrival, it was seized by customs and he was asked to pay import duty on the item. He had to pay to clear the item so as to present it as planned.

Unknown to many Nigerians, import duty is not supposed to be paid on items meant for personal use. Import duty is usually paid only on goods that are meant to be resold or in large quantity. For example, you can't order for 20 phones or shoes and convince anyone that they are for personal use.

Yesterday, a federal judge in Abuja ruled that it was unlawful for customs to have collected the sum of N156,955.20k as import duty on a Louis Vuitton laptop bag found in the personal baggage of a customer. Quoting copiously from the customs and excise duty act, the Judge awarded the sum of N5m against customs, and asked them to refund the import duty paid by the customer.

The joy for me here is that someone decided to go to court to challenge what apparently was a clear case of abuse of power, likely fuelled by crass ignorance by customs. I am very sure that many Nigerians would have had similar experiences, paid the money or forfeited the item and just moved on to avoid "trouble". That is the sort of defeatist mentality we mostly exhibit each time our fundamental rights are grossly violated.

One is forced to ask, is it that customs weren't aware of their own laws? On what basis did they decide to extort Nigerians whose only crime was that they decided to shop for items abroad? How many other Nigerians have had similar experiences and didn't talk?

In a similar case, earlier in the year, a lady went to a Chinese restaurant in Lagos and was told that she couldn't sit down to eat except she does a take away. She sort to know why, and was told by a fellow Nigerian working in the restaurant that it was the company policy. A policy to exclude Nigerians from eating in a restaurant in their own country?

Not satisfied, the lady requested to see the manager and she was bluntly told by the Chinese man that eat-in was only for Chinese and white nationals, while Nigerians were only allowed to order for take away. Infuriated by this grand policy of segregation in Lagos of all places, the lady recorded a video of the incident and it went viral.

The Lagos state government acted swiftly and  sealed off the restaurant for further investigations. Do you know how many Nigerians might have also suffered similar humiliation and decided to just order and go to avoid "trouble"? It took one responsible citizen to act properly to change what was apparently wrong. Curiously, the restaurant has been operating for years.

We can't sit down, fold our hands and expect this country to change without doing anything. As a citizen, if you haven't played your role, you have no right to demand performance from government. A lot of us are extremely docile to the point that if we are asked by a government agency to pay tax for breathing in air, we will pay just to avoid "trouble".

The office of the citizen is the most important office in a democracy. If citizens refuse to play their own roles, then they should stop complaining about government. We must resist what we don't like so as to force a change. If Rosa Parks hadn't refused to give up her seat years ago, probably the segregation laws in the US would have lasted much longer.

I have narrated these two incidents today to show that unless and until we demand for the country of our dreams and each of us is ready to do something about it, we will continue to live in these degrading conditions. If you can talk, talk. If you can write, write. If you can sue, sue. If you can protest, protest. Whatever you can, just do it! What is unacceptable is extreme docility.

On April 14, 2020, I suspended United States contributions to the World Health Organization pending an investigation by my Administration of the organization's failed response to the COVID-19 outbreak. This review has confirmed many of the serious concerns I raised last month and identified others that the World Health Organization should have addressed, especially the World Health Organization's alarming lack of independence from the People's Republic of China. Based on this review, we now know the following:

The World Health Organization consistently ignored credible reports of the virus spreading in Wuhan in early December 2019 or even earlier, including reports from the Lancet medical journal. The World Health Organization failed to independently investigate credible reports that conflicted directly with the Chinese government's official accounts, even those that came from sources within Wuhan itself.

By no later than December 30, 2019, the World Health Organization office in Beijing knew that there was a "major public health" concern in Wuhan. Between December 26 and December 30, China's media highlighted evidence of a new virus emerging from Wuhan, based on patient data sent to multiple Chinese genomics companies. Additionally, during this period, Dr. Zhang Jixian, a doctor from Hubei Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, told China's health authorities that a new coronavirus was causing a novel disease that was, at the time, afflicting approximately 180 patients.

By the next day, Taiwanese authorities had communicated information to the World Health Organization indicating human-to-human transmission of a new virus. Yet the World Health Organization chose not to share any of this critical information with the rest of the world, probably for political reasons.
The International Health Regulations require countries to report the risk of a health emergency within 24 hours. But China did not inform the World Health Organization of Wuhan's several cases of pneumonia, of unknown origin, until December 31, 2019, even though it likely had knowledge of these cases days or weeks earlier.

According to Dr. Zhang Yongzhen of the Shanghai Public Health Clinic Center, he told Chinese authorities on January 5, 2020, that he had sequenced the genome of the virus. There was no publication of this information until six days later, on January 11, 2020, when Dr. Zhang self-posted it online. The next day, Chinese authorities closed his lab for "rectification." As even the World Health Organization acknowledged, Dr. Zhang's posting was a great act of "transparency." But the World Health Organization has been conspicuously silent both with respect to the closure of Dr. Zhang's lab and his assertion that he had notified Chinese authorities of his breakthrough six days earlier.

The World Health Organization has repeatedly made claims about the coronavirus that were either grossly inaccurate or misleading.

On January 14, 2020, the World Health Organization gratuitously reaffirmed China's now-debunked claim that the coronavirus could not be transmitted between humans, stating: "Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) identified in Wuhan, China." This assertion was in direct conflict with censored reports from Wuhan.

On January 21, 2020, President Xi Jinping of China reportedly pressured you not to declare the coronavirus outbreak an emergency. You gave in to this pressure the next day and told the world that the coronavirus did not pose a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Just over one week later, on January 30, 2020, overwhelming evidence to the contrary forced you to reverse course.
On January 28, 2020, after meeting with President Xi in Beijing, you praised the Chinese government for its "transparency" with respect to the coronavirus, announcing that China had set a "new standard for outbreak control" and "bought the world time."

You did not mention that China had, by then, silenced or punished several doctors for speaking out about the virus and restricted Chinese institutions from publishing information about it.

Even after you belatedly declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on January 30, 2020, you failed to press China for the timely admittance of a World Health Organization team of international medical experts.

As a result, this critical team did not arrive in China until two weeks later, on February 16, 2020. And even then, the team was not allowed to visit Wuhan until the final days of their visit. Remarkably, the World Health Organization was silent when China denied the two American members of the team access to Wuhan entirely.

You also strongly praised China's strict domestic travel restrictions, but were inexplicably against my closing of the United States border, or the ban, with respect to people coming from China. I put the ban in place regardless of your wishes. Your political gamesmanship on this issue was deadly, as other governments, relying on your comments, delayed imposing life-saving restrictions on travel to and from China.

Incredibly, on February 3, 2020, you reinforced your position, opining that because China was doing such a great job protecting the world from the virus, travel restrictions were "causing more harm than good." Yet by then the world knew that, before locking down Wuhan, Chinese authorities had allowed more than five million people to leave the city and that many of these people were bound for international destinations all over the world.

As of February 3, 2020, China was strongly pressuring countries to lift or forestall travel restrictions. This pressure campaign was bolstered by your incorrect statements on that day telling the world that the spread of the virus outside of China was "minimal and slow" and that "the chances of getting this going to anywhere outside China [were] very low."

On March 3, 2020, the World Health Organization cited official Chinese data to downplay the very serious risk of asymptomatic spread, telling the world that "COVID-19 does not transmit as efficiently as influenza" and that unlike influenza this disease was not primarily driven by "people who are infected but not yet sick." China's evidence, the World Health Organization told the world, "showed that only one percent of reported cases do not have symptoms, and most of those cases develop symptoms within two days."

Many experts, however, citing data from Japan, South Korea, and elsewhere, vigorously questioned these assertions. It is now clear that China's assertions, repeated to the world by the World Health Organization, were wildly inaccurate.

By the time you finally declared the virus a pandemic on March 11, 2020, it had killed more than 4,000 people and infected more than 100,000 people in at least 114 countries around the world.

On April 11, 2020, several African Ambassadors wrote to the Chinese Foreign Ministry about the discriminatory treatment of Africans related to the pandemic in Guangzhou and other cities in China. You were aware that Chinese authorities were carrying out a campaign of forced quarantines, evictions, and refusal of services against the nationals of these countries. You have not commented on China's racially discriminatory actions.

You have, however, baselessly labeled as racist Taiwan's well-founded complaints about your mishandling of this pandemic.

Throughout this crisis, the World Health Organization has been curiously insistent on praising China for its alleged "transparency." You have consistently joined in these tributes, notwithstanding that China has been anything but transparent. In early January, for example, China ordered samples of the virus to be destroyed, depriving the world of critical information.

Even now, China continues to undermine the International Health Regulations by refusing to share accurate and timely data, viral samples and isolates, and by withholding vital information about the virus and its origins. And, to this day, China continues to deny international access to their scientists and relevant facilities, all while casting blame widely and recklessly and censoring its own experts.

The World Health Organization has failed to publicly call on China to allow for an independent investigation into the origins of the virus, despite the recent endorsement for doing so by its own Emergency Committee. The World Health Organization's failure to do so has prompted World Health Organization member states to adopt the "COVID-19 Response" Resolution at this year's World Health Assembly, which echoes the call by the United States and so many others for an impartial, independent, and comprehensive review of how the World Health Organization handled the crisis. The resolution also calls for an investigation into the origins of the virus, which is necessary for the world to understand how best to counter the disease. Perhaps worse than all these failings is that we know that the World Health Organization could have done so much better.

Just a few years ago, under the direction of a different Director-General, the World Health Organization showed the world how much it has to offer. In 2003, in response to the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in China, Director-General Harlem Brundtland boldly declared the World Health Organization's first emergency travel advisory in 55 years, recommending against travel to and from the disease epicenter in southern China.

She also did not hesitate to criticize China for endangering global health by attempting to cover up the outbreak through its usual playbook of arresting whistleblowers and censoring media. Many lives could have been saved had you followed Dr. Brundtland's example.

It is clear the repeated missteps by you and your organization in responding to the pandemic have been extremely costly for the world. The only way forward for the World Health Organization is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China.

My Administration has already started discussions with you on how to reform the organization. But action is needed quickly. We do not have time to waste.

That is why it is my duty, as President of the United States, to inform you that, if the World Health Organization does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the World Health Organization permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization.

I cannot allow American taxpayer dollars to continue to finance an organization that, in its present state, is so clearly not serving America's interests.

Sincerely, Donald Trump

Anger Kills

*_TOO LATE TO  APOLOGISE_*.

"Where are you coming from by this time of the night?"

He thundered.

"Honey you won't believe what happened today. Oh God I'm so tired right now."

She replied as she yawned.

"I asked where you are coming from and you are vomiting rubbish. Does that answer my question? Are you trying to pretend you don't know there's no food in this house?"

He said fuming.

"Honey I'm sorry but you should hear me out first. I...."

Before she could complete that sentence, a thunderous slap kissed her left cheek and she passed out on the sofa.

"Get my dinner ready, after that you will tell me why you switched off your phone."

He said as he walked towards the bedroom.

When he noticed there was no response from his wife, he was infuriated.

He rushed towards her to unleash the rest of the demon in him but on getting close to her, he discovered she has passed out.

He was shocked.

Cold sweat appeared on his forehead and raced down his temple.

Fear gripped him.

He began to panic.

He dashed into the bedroom, picked his car key and darted out of the house to open his car.

He rushed back into the house almost immediately, lifted his wife and headed to his car.

As he made to start the ignition, the car key fell off his hand.

He was visibly shaking.

Picking up the car key proved to be a difficult task to him as he couldn't get hold of it.

He succeeded but had to use both hands to start the car ignition. His shaky hands turned against him.

His heart was racing.

He couldn't hold the steering firmly but he managed to drive his way to the hospital.

Getting to the hospital, he alerted the nurses. His wife was rushed into the emergency ward.

He became restless.

After about five minutes, his doctor appeared to him.

"Good evening Mr Collins."

"Good evening doctor, how's my wife?"

He said with great panic.

"Your wife was here few hours ago. She brought your mum to the hospital before going home and if she had been ten minutes late, your mum would have died.

She wanted to alert you but her phone battery went flat. I would have called you but she said she will notify you when she get home. What really happened?"

The doctor asked.

"Doctor, is my wife okay?"

He asked with teary eyes.

"Your mum is in the other ward Mr Collins."

The doctor replied.

He couldn't hide his impatience as he gripped the doctor's shirt.

"What about my wife doctor? Is she okay?"

The doctor managed to pull his hands off his shirt before letting the cat out of the bag.

"I'm sorry Mr Collins, your wife couldn't make it. She's dead.

He was shocked.

Cold shivers ran down his spine.

He began to shake.

Hot tears welled up his eyes and as he made an attempt to speak, they raced down his cheeks.

Liquid fluids leaked out of his nostrils and wetted his lips. His shirt became drenched with sweat.

He wanted to man up but he couldn't.

He groaned in pain and let out a mad shout.

"Noooooo!!!"

But then, it was too late to correct his mistake.

He should have heard her first as requested by her.

He should have controlled his anger.

He shouldn't have laid his hand on her.

He should have been patient with her.

He shouldn't have....

He should have....

All these rhetoric questions....

But he didn't.

It was too late to apologize.

Don't make such a mistake.

SAY NO TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!!!
Good morning. Keep Staying Safe.

Marry A Wise Woman

*DEADLOCK* PLS, READ*
*By Kay Lord*

Renato Oil and Gas is a multinational oil company in Nigeria. It is also operating in over 10 other countries across Europe, the Middle East and the Americas with their global  headquarters in Kohln, Germany.

This oil company has been operating in Nigeria for 25 years with German expatriates as MD/CEO for thesame number of years. Recently, the current MD, who's the third since Renato started operations in Nigeria  sent in a notice of retirement letter to the Board at their global headquarters in Germany.

The Board, after deliberation decided that after 25 years of operation in Nigeria, they've been able to grow and train people capable and equiped enough to take charge of the Nigerian operations, hence it was decided that a Nigerian amongst the top Executive Directors of the company in Nigeria should henceforth be appointed to preside over the affairs of the Nigerian subsidiary as MD/CEO.

Immediately the news of this decision filtered into the company in Nigeria, every staff already narrowed it down to two EDs. These two, most senior of the four EDs, came in as members of the pioneer staff of the company. Over the years, apart from their top academic qualifications from Ivy League institutions,  they've been fortunate to have undergone series of training abroad on several occasions, and have both at one time or the other worked at the global headquarters and other subsidiaries of Renato oil around the world.

The Board asked any of the EDs interested to apply. The four EDs applied and after series of interviews both in Nigeria and Germany, true to speculation of most staff, the two most senior and experienced EDs were finally shortlisted for the final interview.

Fredrick Wale Coker is Executive Director, Accounts & Human Resources. He's 46 years old, married to Jane Olanike Coker and they are blessed with 3 kids ages 16, 13 and 10. Fred is a first class graduate of Accounting at the age of 19 years from the University of Lagos. He later went back to the University of Port Harcourt to earn another degree in Petroleum Engineering (2:1) and an MBA (Oil & Gas) from University of Dundee, Scotland UK. He's also a chattered accountant and an alumni of Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University. His wife, Jane runs an expensive private nursery and Primary school in the highbrow old Ikoyi on Lagos Island.

Nosa Oladeji Osogbe is Executive Director, Operations & Engineering. He attended the premier University, University of Ibadan where he studied Mechanical Engineering and bagged a first class and the best graduating student of his faculty. He thereafter proceeded to MIT where he did his masters in Engineering specialising in oil and gas engineering. He also attended Harvard for his MBA degree. He's happily married to Erica Osogbe, an insurance broker with one of the top insurance brokerage firm in Nigeria and they are blessed with two kids, 18 and 16 years respectively. Nosa  is 47 years old.

They were called to Germany to face the global Board of Renato Oil at the company headquarters for the last interview. There are 10 categories of areas in which they would be asked questions and each of the 10 member board are to score each candidate over 10. At the end of the interview, there was a tie. 5 board members score Fred higher while the other 5 members score Nosa higher. After much arguments, they could not reach a consensus. The Chairman decided to call off the meeting for another day. They asked Fred and Nosa to go back to Nigeria while the decision of the Board would be conveyed to them soonest.

It's been 3 months and nothing has been heard from Germany. Meanwhile, Mr Goldberg the current MD has a month before his final bow out. His farewell ceremony is already  been planned with a cocktail and dinner to be held at the prestigious Eko Hotel in Victoria Island. The global Chairman of the board, global MD/CEO and 3 other members of the board would be coming from Germany for the farewell ceremony for Mr Goldberg who has put in 35 years in the service of Renato oil.

The question is, who takes over Renato Nigeria? The Chairman does not believe in appointing people in acting capacity, and does not at the same time to want to leave a vacuum once the current MD leaves.  When the German team arrived Nigeria, at their meeting with Mr Goldberg, he made them to understand that having worked with both Fred and Nosa for 7 years, he would be okay if any amongst them is appointed as they are absolutely super qualified and capable. The only woman amongst the board suggested that since Fred and Nosa's wife would be coming for the cocktail/dinner party, they should one on one engage their wives to see the other side of this two gentlemen. Let's have an informal chat with each wife, I am sure that would break the deadlock. Not that who they are at home or with their wives has anything to do with their job performance which we already know, but in situation like this we can use it to break the deadlock. Funnily, all of them agreed to this proposal.

On the night of the party, both Fred and Nosa arrives with their wives. Mr. Goldberg had been instructed to fully engage Fred and Nosa in order for their wives to be free. Unknowingly as cocktail is served, the Chairman and his crew gets to work, engaging Jane and Erica separately and informally.

At home prior to the Farewell Dinner of her husband’s boss at Eko hotel, Jane Coker was at home having an argument with her husband about his workaholic nature and his not spending enough time with her and the kids…

It has always been a sour point in Fred and Jane’s marriage. Fred has always been a serious minded person right from school. He’s a provider and he loves his wife and kids to bits but when it comes to his responsibility in the office, he can’t help putting too much time and energy into it. He kept telling Jane that Renato has given him a great life and the least he can do is to work hard for the company that changed his life for good. As an Executive Director, apart from a fabulous pay package, thier kids are entitled to full scholarship up to University level, a home in highbrow Ikoyi which becomes theirs at retirement and an all expense paid summer holiday for the whole family once a year. All these is apart from generous allowances as at when due. Fred always feel obligated to give all back to the company and often times to the detriment of his family.

Jane understand Fred’s argument but just does not buy the idea of making your family pay dearly for this work obsession. This has been a dark spot in their marriage and Jane over the years took solace in her kids and her passion for running her Nursery/ Primary school. The only day Fred ever stays at home and not go to work is on Sunday, that’s if he’s not traveling abroad on official assignment. Jane wonders why she should remain in a marriage where for sometimes two months, her husband would refuse to perform his conjugal responsibility. For how long is she going to live a sexless life at age 42 or keep begging her husband for sex.

Meanwhile, at Nosa and Erica’s home prior to the farewell dinner for Mr Goldberg at Eko Hotel, it was a silence of the grave yard scenario.

Nosa and Erica have not been on talking terms for three days until that morning when Nosa had to break the ice because of the farewell dinner they both have to attend. As usual, it’s all about money issue. Erica believes Nosa is too tight fisted and only cares for his siblings and parents to the detriment of his immediate family. Erica shouted at him few days ago about how as usual she asked him for some money, he refused but later went ahead to send more than the amount she asked for to his youngest brother he’s training in a UK University.

“You can spend any amount on your parents and siblings but when it comes to your family, it’s always excuse everytime. Why did you even marry and have a family? Why not just stay single and slave for your family…” Erica shouted at him.

Nosa hates it when Erica starts her usual trouble. Left to him, as far as he’s concerned, he’s been able to give the best to his immediate family. They don’t lack anything and his position at work gave them virtually everything free including the education of their two kids who are both schooling abroad in very expensive institutions. What he would not do is indulge Erica and be wasteful with money like her. After all, she earns well so why can’t she use her own money for all her ridiculous expenses. How can you be asking me to change a car I bought for you two years ago just because a new model just came out? No way! You can as well buy it with your own money.

“No amount of blackmail or cold shoulder would make me change a two year old car…” Nosa vowed.

At Eko Hotel, the venue of the Farewell Dinner for the outgoing MD/CEO of Renato Oil and Gas, Mr Goldberg is in full swing. The Minister for Petroleum, CEO of other sister oil companies, multinational companies, Banks, captains of industries and political big wigs are all trooping in. The Sugar band is dishing out old Lionel Richie tunes while cocktail is served.

The Global Chairman of Renato and other board members present agreed the only woman amongst them, Mrs. Randberg should meet up and have conversations with both Mrs Jane Coker and Erica Osogbe so that they can have time to attend to other issues and meet important dignitaries.

Mrs Randberg was first introduced to Jane Coker by the MD, Mr Goldberg…

Mrs Coker, it’s a pleasure meeting you.

The pleasure is all mine. Thank you very much and I hope you are enjoying the African sunshine…

Ohh indeed, I am….    and how are the kids?

The kids are all back at school now. It’s school season here.

Ohh that’s great. So, it’s just you and Fred at home. That gives room for good bonding when kids are not home…

Yes, even when they are home, Fred is a great and considerate family man and affectionate too…
(cursing furiously under her breadth… I hate all this corporate dinners where I have to keep the image and lie through my teeth. Affectionate my foot! Fred has not even made love to me in two months...)

Ohhh… That’s so romantic… Mrs. Coker, how lucky you are…

Hmmmm…        Yes, indeed (why did I even come here?)

I am sure I will still see you later Mrs Coker, it’s been nice talking to you.

Thank you Madam, do have a great evening.

The cocktail was almost over before Mrs Randberg was introduced to Erica Osogbe by Mr. Goldberg. He was busy going round to greet a lot of dignitaries coming in…

Mrs Osogbe, how are you. Nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you too… I hope your stay in Nigeria has been eventful.

Absolutely! This is my third time in Nigeria in the last four years and I always enjoy the buzz of Lagos…

Ohhh that’s great. Indeed Lagos is really buzzy…

Your husband spoke so highly of you Mrs Osogbe. He said you are a brilliant insurance broker here in Lagos…

Erica: Really?…I am flattered…I thank him for telling you that but I wish I can speak so highly of him like that right now…not that he’s not good at what he does here at Renato but I wish he can be that good to us like that at home.

BM: Oh never mind, men would always be men sometimes, don’t take it to heart Mrs. Osogbe…

Mrs… Errmmmm

Ranberg… Just call me Hannah…

Okay Mrs. Ran… Ohhh… Hannah, you know not all men are mean. My husband is a good man, just that he’s mean when it comes to money. Not that he doesn’t have the money but he rather waste it on other people than me, his wife…can you imagine I ask him to buy me a new car and he refused saying my old car is still okay… (thinking… I am going to spoil his parade here with one of his colleagues…if he thinks he can make me unhappy at home, I will also make him look bad with one of his colleagues)…

Never mind, I am sure he would still get it for you…(whispers in Erica’s ear..) I will help you nudge him….its been nice meeting you.

Same here Mrs....Hannah..

Monday morning at the Board room of Renato Oil & Gas, Mrs Randberg is briefing the Chairman, other board members and the MD of her encounter and conversation with both Fred and Nosa’s wives. She confidently and without hesitation told them Fredrick Coker has a more stable and settled family life than Nosa, therefore it would be better to appoint him as the next MD of Renato Nigeria.

The Chairman wanted a more detailed explanation and why Mrs Randberg arrived at her position. She posited that if you want to know a man very well, talk to his wife. A wife is the best representation of her husband and a sure reflection of his home. The position of a chief executive needs a man with a clear mind and a non troubling family life…running Renato takes a lot and if your home is not conducive and peaceful enough, your output might be affected.

But can we use a one encounter with Nosa’s wife to pass a judgement on his family life? I have worked with him for 7 years and there has never been anytime his family life affected his work here at Renato…the MD responded.

Too bad, Mrs. Randberg quipped. First impression last longer. We all agreed we will use this encounter to make our final choice and break the deadlock. Not that we are passing a vote of no confidence on Nosa. He might have a great family life just like you said, I don’t doubt that but his wife talks too much and there are some matters between husband and wife not meant for outsiders you are meeting for the first time. For all I care, Fred might have a more volatile marital life but his wife kept it under wraps and put up a good representation for her husband.

Okay, the deal is done. Mr Goldberg, please call a meeting of management for 9 am tomorrow where I would announce the appointment of Fred Coker as the new MD/CEO of Renato Nigeria. Meanwhile, prepare his letter of appointment for me to sign while you inform him to see me at my hotel tonight at 7pm to inform him personally before the official announcement tomorrow morning.

The Realities Of Covid 19 And Post Covid 19 Times

RUN, GET PREPARED BEFORE THE IMPENDING BAD ECONOMIC RAIN STARTS

By Anayo Nwosu, OON

The economic hardship that will befall on countries like Nigeria after and during COVID-19 is better imagined than experienced. It is akin to what the Igbos suffered after the war.

Unfortunately, even the Igbos whose population are now mostly post-1970 have lost the post-civil war economic survival experience and may be exposed to the same hardships other Nigerians would suffer in months to come.

The worst of is that foreign nations who normally come to our aid are also challenged because the suspension of economic activities due to coronavirus has hit them so hardly. They will first focus on their recovery than to look for who to help. Nigeria will have to enjoy all their years of maladministration and lack of focused leadership.

All can testify that both Federal and State governments could not reach out to everyone with COVID-19 palliatives despite their best efforts. They simply cannot because there is no enough money or resources to achieve that. Even those charged with distribution needed the palliatives more than the intended targets. So, it boils down to "onye ọbụla chebe onwe ya" meaning "everyone should fend for himself or herself" also know as OYO.

Only those who escaped abroad before now shall be better of as most western nations have closed their borders to tourists and immigrants. We are all trapped in here.

"Ma eze ma ochi ikpe" meaning "we all" shall now use those hospitals we refused to equip or even abandoned, the schools we failed to adequately staff and equip, the roads we refused to build or built on TV and social media.

In weeks to come, many employers of labour will shed some weights. Marriages standing on one foot are waiting for relaxation of lockdown and curfew to collapse. The federal and state governments would begin to delay or owe salaries because oil and other revenues have  dipped or not received. States who depend only on federal allocation would beg to be merged with other states. Southeast will soon find out that they only need one house of assembly not five. Other states will realize the same thing and cry for restructuring will rent the air.

With high unemployment rates, crime rate will rise and the rich will park their SUVs at home and fly okada (which will have to be unbanned) to avoid being noticed as rich. The prostitutes will be offering credit sales while many junior pastors will revolt to start  their own business centres.

Many former almajiri youths in the north will move enmass towards the south for economic survival. The massive movement being noticed now is going to be a child's play when inter-state lockdown is lifted. Southern states must plan to build a holding accommodation for them since there is no law prohibiting the movement of any Nigerian. Don’t think it’s a northern agenda to send soldiers to islamize the south. No, it is akin to southerners' migration to Europe where they plead for economic asylum. Don't they engage in economic malfeasance and drug peddling there? The almajiris will of course arrive with their own vices.

Many youths will no longer go to church as they have learnt during COVID-19 that churches offer no immunity to a common virus not to talk about their existential issues. They would feel that some people have been scamming them. The orthodox churches would suffer what their western counterparts suffered that made them unban homosexuality to attract members.

It is going to be a chaos.

But how do you as a person feature in all these? The following are suggested ways you could navigate through the coming economic psunami:

1. Hold on to your cash. Cash is king. There will be a lot of opportunities for those who have cash in hand. So, save as if your life depends on it. Foreigners  will sell their businesses to leave Nigeria. Many people will sell their prime land or houses at a give away prices.

2. Get ready for sack. Organisations must reduce cost to survive. If you are not the owner of the business or are not an essential staff, start thinking of an option B now. Don't be deceived by rhetorics. All jobs are under threat. Many have already sacked their drivers and other domestic servants in the name of COVID-19 safety concerns. Many of them may never return. Same goes for side chicks and side women. Guys are now learning how to only plug to the same sockets.

3. Start thinking of going into agriculture but you must study the risk properly. If you’re a white or blue collar job person please start from sales or distribution of farm produce. That’s where the money is made. Farming is more of a passion except for commercial farming which is capital intensive.

4. Forget getting into selling of goods purchased abroad which prices are denominated in foreign currency.

5. As a new timer, avoid fashion, beauty products business, gold and other giffen goods now as the mass market are in existential goods.

6. Cut all unuseful friends; all those “bros take or give me one bottle attitude”. Not now. Learn how to drink alone at home for now. You need some tincture of alcohol to think straight at this time. If you cannot drink please pray and shout a lot, it has the same effect.

7. Read a lot to acquire new knowledge. Read motivational and professional books online if you cannot buy.

8. Stop pursuing or the craze to invest in government contracts. It is more dangerous now as you may not be paid. Get involved only if the advanced payment would cover your cost and profit. Governments have so much to do with reduced revenue.

9. Move your children to schools you can afford even while you are out of job or when your business slows down.

10. Get married to someone who can help carry your load as Simeon de Cyrene.

11. Wed now using COVID-19 protocol of ban on number of people assembling in one place as an excuse to save a whole lot.

12. Pray a lot for God’s direction and grace.

The bad times would only get worse for anyone who doesn’t get prepared now.

Do know what? In the weeks and months to come, there would be new a group of former rich men and women. They are those who resisted change. They failed to read the signs of times.

Some businesses will crumple as typewriters and touch lights did following the emergence of computers and phones.

Everyone should wear a thinking cap to face this new normal. It is scary.

A war foretold doesn’t consume the cripple.

WHY?

DO YOU KNOW WHY????

1. WHY?

Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?

BECAUSE

When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich.
Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left.
Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right!
And that's where women's buttons have remained since.

2. WHY?

Why do ships and aircraft use 'Mayday' as their call for help?

BECAUSE

This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced approximately as 'mayday.'

3. WHY?

Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?

BECAUSE

In France where tennis became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'the egg.'
When tennis was introduced in the US, Americans (naturally), mispronounced it 'love.'

4. WHY?

Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?

BECAUSE

In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X.
Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.

5. WHY?

Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'Passing the buck'?

BECAUSE

In card games, it was once customary to pass an item called a buck from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal.
If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player.

6. WHY?

Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?

BECAUSE

In earlier times, it used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink.
To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host.
Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own.

7. WHY?

Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'?

BECAUSE

Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light.
In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the centre of attention

8. WHY?

Why is someone who is feeling great said to be 'On cloud nine'?

BECAUSE

Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud.
If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.

9. WHY?

In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from?

BECAUSE

When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots' game, 'golf.'
He had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment.
To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her.
Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her.
In French, the word 'cadet' is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into 'caddie'.

10. WHY?

Why are many coin collection jar banks shaped like pigs?

BECAUSE

Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called 'pygg'.
When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.'
When an English potter misunderstood the  word, he made a container that resembled a pig.
And it caught on.

THIS IS WHY.

We Are Slaves In Our Own Land

I have a question for you all my friends of this generation.

It is as follows.

What will be your achievement if in your old age, the child you sponsored through university education right in front of your eyes becomes a slave working for an illiterate Chinese man for $100/month, not in China but right there in Nigeria, your own country?

Think about that. Yes, you will ask me, where is this coming from?

Thank you for asking.

Let me quickly say that the internet is overflowing with videos and information about the dealings, actions and activities of Americans, Europeans and Chinese governments and citizens towards Africa and Africans, so you can substantiate everything you are about to read from me

Firstly, for over 500 years, the white man has continually robbed us, Africans,  and we have failed to learn from it.

Let me sound it from the mountain top

*THE WHITE MAN HAS NEVER AND WILL NEVER LIKE OR LOVE YOU. EVERY TIME THEY COME TO YOU, IT IS TO ROB AND KILL YOU. FINANCIAL AIDS, VACCINES, FOOD AND EVERYTHING THEY DO FOR  YOU IS MEANT FOR THEIR OWN ADVANTAGE AND CONTROL OVER YOU*

Yet, our leaders continue to receive them with open arms.

America, Britain, France and co, all have the same *agenda* towards Africa, they see us as glorified monkeys that cannot think.

*For so many years, we've proved them right*

Secondly, today, our leaders are repeating the errors of 500 years ago, when our forefathers sold their brothers for mirrors.

They sold them into slavery in foreign lands.

Today, our present leaders are selling our land and people to the Chinese for bribes of $100k to $1m.

*A black man cannot buy a property in China, he can only rent or lease but in Africa, Chinese are buying acres and hectares of land outright*
.
As much as I will not like to bore you, I must share my revelation with you.

In a dream, I saw myself and 2 other men working for peanuts in a labor camp owned by a Chinese doctor.

What does this mean?

It means, that the Chinese are about to own Africa and turn it into a labor camp where the next generation will be working for them.

Guess what?

It's already happening, in Ogun state, the Chinese have a place where they buy farm produce directly from our farmers, totally unsupervised by either the ministry of agriculture or commerce.

The young men that work for the Chinese merchants toil from 7am to 7pm for N700/day in Nigeria.

That is less than $2/day in your own country.

My problem with you my friends is that we continue to play "helpless" while all these things are happening in our own time.

You are educated, you are able to educate your kids but look ahead of you, 10, 20 years from now, when China owns everything in Africa, you would have educated your kids to slave for an uneducated Chinese in your own land.

It is time to do something, to mount enough pressure on our leaders.

Call your senators, carry placards, pressure your governors  until they bring the discussion to the forefront, to change the laws and say no to foreigners owning our country.

They can only lease a property for a maximum of 10 years.  No outright sales of properties to foreigners.

Regrets In Old Age

*THINGS THAT CAUSE REGRET AT OLD AGE*

When younger we make various choice's without the future in mind. Sometimes those choices bite us in our mid-life. These are some of the things one might regret when they're older.

1. *Marrying the wrong person*

When you're young, check your motives for marrying. Don't marry to copy your peers, or for social standing or out of pressure. Marry for love and companionship, marry the right person, marry your best friend. For if you marry the wrong person or for the wrong reasons, you will have to put up with that person the rest of your life. Things might get worse between you two; then depression, physical abuse, affairs, pain, shame, court cases, bitterness will define your mid-life years all because you chose the wrong one. Things will get worse when children are involved. Make the right choice of a spouse when you are young.

2. *The opportunities you did not seize*

When you are younger many doors will open, you will get many chances. Many young people let these opportunities go because of fear, laziness, or pride; yet well younger and with more energy is the best time to start a venture and a name for yourself. Some think the opportunities are too big for them. Take advantage of them or one day when you're older you will want to go back and grab those missed chances.

3. *The bridges you burned*

When we are younger, we care little for relationships, what most think about is getting money and moving up the ladder of success at all cost. Many use and trample on people to progress, they take relationships for granted, messing up bonds, sleeping with people for personal gain. But these bad actions will catch up with you ahead. When you will realize how empty life is without love and friends. When you will have success but no one around you or no one to trust you.

4. *The child you aborted*

You are a young lady, you get pregnant and you are scared. You take the aborting option quickly thinking of that moment then. But when you are much older, you will look back and wish you kept that baby. When you will be rich and successful you will wish that child you gave up on would be around to enjoy the fruits of your hard work. Being a single mother doesn't mean you can't make it in life or you can't find a man in future.

5. *The child you rejected*

Young man, you impregnated a woman, she told you she's pregnant with your child. You rejected her and the baby and ran. But years later when you're 50 something, you will wish you were responsible, you will wish you manned up and became a father to that child. You will see that child excel and become an adult but will have no claim to that grown child who you rejected from the beginning. You will regret being a Dead Beat Dad by choice

 6. *The marriage you destroyed*

So you get married to your good fiance; the first months in marriage were good but shortly after, with your money and charm, you started having affairs. You became unfaithful. Your spouse begged you to stop, your children started hurting, your marriage was collapsing. One day when you are older, it will hit you how foolish you were to destroy the good marriage you had began to build for mere temporary thrills in affairs that did you no good. You will realize the damage you caused to your children and spouse.

7. *The God you disowned*

When you are much older you become wiser, God becomes more real as you see life in a more meaningful way. But don't wait to get older to start enjoying a relationship with God. Know God when you are young, build your future with God. Don't be a young rebel who runs back to God when age catches up.

8. *The body you messed up*

You have only one body to live with all your life. The cigarettes, the alcohol you are abusing, the drugs you are taking, the unhealthy food you're consuming; all that will destroy you slowly. When you are 50 and lifestyle diseases catch up with you, you will wish you took care of your body when younger, that you exercised more; but now the damage is done.

9. *The time you wasted*

The time you are wasting when younger in worry, wrong relationships, laziness, being a couch potato, giving excuses and pursuing meaningless things; you will never get it back.

10. *The dreams and talents you shelved*

Are you talented when young; are there things you love to do and you are good at them? Nurture those talents, exploit them, don't give up even if you encounter set backs, don't give up on your dreams. If you give up, when you're older you will look at your peers who stuck to what they love and made it and think to yourself, "That could have been me". Pursue a career, study a course you love. Don't waste years of your life in a field that doesn't fulfill you.

11 *The name you defamed*

When you are older, a legacy is very important, the value of your name is crucial. You will ask yourself what is your reputation, what are you leaving behind? Your legacy is a sum total of your actions since youthful days. We write our biography by how we live life everyday. When you look back your path and you see the mud you threw at your own name, the shame you attracted and the little value you have added to the world; you will regret.

12. *The wealth you threw away*

Are you riding on good money during your productive years? Earning good money? Don't throw away that money in clubs, reckless living and wasteful shopping. Invest with that money, widen your revenue stream, make that money work for you and keep it safe to take care of you in your older years. Leave an inheritance for your loved ones so that you will never say "I wish I knew better"

13. *The good love that got away*

Is there that great person in your life loving you good? Don't push that person away, or else that person will walk out your life and you will never ever find someone that incredible and who connects with you all your life. It will torment you to grow older with thoughts of "What if I was still with that person?"

14 *The parents you despised*

When younger, it is easy to show contempt to your parents; what do your parent's know? They are old-fashioned, shady and small -minded. But your parents are still your parents whether you agree with them or not, whatever their style. Don't let your parent die or age separated from you, reconcile and make up. When you get older, you will realize why your parents wanted to be close to you. The older you get, the more you see the value.
