Concept Of Classroom Discipline

Discipline is not control from the outside; it's order from within. Discipline is not about getting the learners to do what you want them to do. That's what dictators do, and you are not a dictator ------ you are an educator.

*What is Classroom Discipline?*

It is a systematic way of providing an environment in which positive teaching and positive learning can occur simultaneously.

*Tips For Achieving And Maintaining Classroom Discipline:*

1) *Greet pupils/students at the door*
Interact with your pupils/students on a personal level every day. Greet them by name. Shake their hand, and welcome them into the classroom  this sets a positive tone for a lesson or for the day.

2) *Get pupils/students focused before you begin any lesson*
Be sure you have their attention before you begin.

3) *Use positive presence*
Move around the classroom continuously. Don't sit or remain stagnant while teaching. Make frequent eye contact, and smile with pupils/students. Monitor pupils/students with your physical presence.

4) *Model the behavior you want pupils/students to produce*
If you exhibit respectfulness, trust, enthusiasm, interest, and courtesy in classroom, pupils/students will return the favor in kind. Remember the saying, *"Values are caught, not taught "*.

5) *Use low profile intervention*
When you see a pupil/student who is misbehaving, be sure your intervention is quiet, calm and inconspicuous.

6) *Verbal reprimands should be private, brief, and as immediate as possible*
The more you reprimand privately, the less likely you will be challenged. The more immediate the reprimand, the less likely the pupil/student will feel you condone his or her behavior.

7) *Acknowledge positive pupil/student behavior when it is not expected*.

8) *Acknowledge hard work, kindness, and dependability*.

9) *If you have rules, enforce those rules.*

10) *Be consistent*
Although, this is easier said than done, the key to an effective discipline policy in any classroom is consistency. Make this principle part of your classroom action plan.

11) *Don't hand out lots of warnings without following through on consequences*
Lots of warnings tell the pupils/students that you won't enforce a rule.

12) *Be fair and impartial*
The rules are there for everyone, and that includes girls as well as boys, tall people and short people, pupils/students with freckles and pupils/students without freckles, and special needs pupils/students as well as gifted pupils/students.

*Other Likely Factors To Consider Before Enforcing Discipline:*

a) Age of the child
b) Health condition of the child
c) Nature/gravity of the offence
d) The school rules and regulations.

*Kindly note that Discipline or Punishments should not be Vindictive or Overrated but Corrective*.

Polish Self For The Best

Please read this brilliant masterpiece written by the son of a literary legend, the inimitable D.O Fagunwa (Author of the books 'Ireke Onibudo', 'Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo irunmole' and others published in the 1920s).

As you are likely to conclude, he is really a chip off the old block. A literary genius, his old man would be proud of.

Enjoy.....

**********

An Auction happened in the years of old, on a day that only the rich would be proud to attend, and the aspiring looked with hope in their hearts and expectations in their minds, that one day shall be one day the pig shall get to Òyọ and́ only the noise it would make shall be dreadful.

The Auction started with all the brilliant bids. There were bids for the papyrus of Egypt, there was a bid for the gold of the streets of Gao. It was touted that an astronaut travelled from space to bid for the regalia of Kúrunmí used for the Ìjàyè war, and Wọlé Ṣóyínká had to be restricted to Ìṣarà to avoid a bid for his white hair.

This was a big auction but somewhere in that same hall waiting to be auctioned was an old gòjé, a traditional stringed instrument and violin. Its wood was beaten and its colour was faded. It was dusty and had been kept in the artic from the period before the fall of the Òyọ́ Empire.

This gòjé was spent and weak, looking exhausted like the intern of a saw mill, and unattractive like the foot mat of a busy place of worship. Its auction was delayed until the end of a decent haggle to forestall a disgraceful end to a graceful day. But there is no way the penis can enjoy bearded meat and the dawn shall refuse to come.

The time of its own auction did come.
“Who shall buy it, who shall pay for it?”, the auctioneer called without enthusiasm
“Ten Kobo” came the first bid
“Twenty”, was the second
“Thirty” came the yawning third
And so on they went till they got to One Naira
One Naira for a whole goje? One Naira for a traditional violin
And the auctioneer finally said
“Going! going….!”

But before he could say gone, a voice came from the stand and asked for the auctioneer to tarry so he can examine the instrument. Out came a young maestro who walked up with the confidence of the Master of the Roll. He took the spent instrument, wiped it clean of its dust and toughened the strings. He picked up the bow and tended the strings with a passion and love that can only be matched by the faith, honour and dignity of the inheritor of a worthwhile legacy.

The young master played a sákárà that belonged to eternity, and his fingers moved with the fluidity that later echoed an àwúrèbe rhythm that could only be heard in paradise. He finished his concert with the mimic of ìyẹ̀rẹ̀ that could only be matched by an adagio that was last heard during the reign of Saul, and was played by David to free Saul of his melancholy.

The auction went somber. The bid matured out of vanity and the power of the master glittered on the horizon. The auctioneer wept, the bidders shed tears, even angels worshipped God in heaven with humility as they listened to music that belonged to the glorious, and was played by the anointed for grace and favour to flow on earth.

The musician gave the auctioneer back the gòjé for auction again and new bids started. The gòjé had suddenly been transformed and new surge of life had been breathed into it. The auctioneer picked it up with reverence and the lots happened with new bids calling.

“Ten thousand” sayeth the first bid
“fifty was the second”
“Five hundred” was to follow and “One Million” came from the shy fourth.
In the end the gòjé was auctioned for five million paid by an anonymous bidder.

So what transformed the instrument? Everyone seemed to ask. Even the auctioneer wondered.

The gòjé was transformed by the celebration that came from a musician who knew the worth of the instrument and that its glory can be sort after. He did not complain but wiped the dust, polished the rust and toughened the strings. He then played a melody and the melody was the good news that transformed the cheap instrument to one of value and that to be cherished.

We, (you and I) Nigerians are the gòjé and we need to know its worth and work to celebrate it. There are many more nice persons among us than misfits. We have people of hard work and discernment within us that number more than the sands on a shore. Let us know this and believe it.

We must now snatch our public space from charlatans that reside within to pollute it giving the impression that they represent us. We must clear our fields of the breath of impurities that those who lead exhale.  We must fight our enemies from wherever they may come, be it the moon, the sun or stars. We must shout our worth for the world to hear so the jealous would know we are proud of our selves.

So, let us rededicate ourselves to building a worthy nation that the world would see and awe. Let us dust our sheets of  glory and celebrate our emblems of pride. We must rekindle our passions of goodness and dance to the music of our name. Though tribe and tongue may differ, we must stand in brotherhood, weather the storm like one to bring out the best in us. We must answer the glorious names of our parents and enjoy the blessings of the angels of our past.

Let us bless the culture of our ancestors and exalt the language of our land. So we can  appreciate the works of our hands, celebrate the spirit from which it came and bring up children from our loins who are proud of us and our heritage.

Indeed a great nation we are. We must not let any cheap monk look at the tarot sheet of failure or the crystal ball of woe to give prophesy of doom to us about our future.

We are a blessed people. We should with dignity jointly sing the song of greatness. Enjoy our grace.

God bless

Precautions During The Heat Period... NMET

You would have noticed recently that the heat during the day and night have been unbearably high. According to Experts, this is as a result of heat waves stemming from the emission of greenhouse gases. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has warned Nigerians to prepare for more hot days and warm nights. This preparation will require smart adaptation strategies and engaging in climate resilient practices to cope with the damage that has been done.
The common effects of heat waves on humans are dehydration which can lead to fainting or death, chickenpox, heat rash, and psychological stress.
In order to cope with the current climate conditions, experts have advised that we should:---

1. Drink more water to keep hydrated.
2. Keep a water bottle with you to remind you to take water.
3. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated drinks during this period.
4. Reduce intake of foods that are rich in protein (e.g. red meats, etc.) because they increase metabolic heat.
5. Feed on fresh fruits and vegetables which are better options.
6. Monitor your blood pressure to ensure you are within the normal range.
7. Stay indoors (in your house or office) between 12noon & 3pm each day as much as possible.
8. Take cold-water baths before going to bed at night.

Please endeavor to adhere, we need you hale and hearty!

Nigerian Chief Justice Defence

Onnoghen: A Learned Defence of Justice of Nigeria after his arrest.

" I just want to point out a few matters in relation to alleged false declarations and statements by Public Officers.
The Fifth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution which provides for the Code of Conduct for Public Officers has two relevant paragraphs.
(a) Paragraph 3 prohibits a Public Officer from operating an account outside the Country. It does not prohibit operating an account in foreign currency in Nigeria. Accordingly there is nothing wrong with opening and operating a domicillary account.
(b) Paragraph 11 mandates a Public Officer to declare all his properties, assets and liabilities every 4 years and at the end of his tenure – 11(1).
Paragraph 11(2) provides that any statement in the declaration found to be false by any authority or person authorised to verify the statement or declaration shall be deemed a breach of the Code.
Leaving aside for a moment the fact that it is only an authority or person authorised to verify the statement or declaration that can find it to be false, the question is what really amounts to a false declaration in respect of assets like bank accounts.
My considered view is that the asset that needs to be declared is the bank account and not the money in it, simply because the nature of bank accounts is that they fall or grow depending on the spending pattern of the account holder. Since the mandatory Constitutional provision is to make a declaration every 4 years, it is not every time you put money in an account that you must declare it. You are only required to declare every 4 years.
Equally importantly, since it is the existence of the bank account that must be declared, a declaration of one bank account in Nigeria, which is BVN linked, is a declaration of all the other bank accounts. This is because by virtue of BVN, any bank account that you have is automatically disclosed whenever you disclose even one of those accounts. Since it is the asset that you are required to disclose, and not the contents, the amount in the other accounts is irrelevant. In any event, by disclosing the account through BVN you have disclosed the contents of the account. Note that an authority and authorised person is required to verify the declaration before it can be said to be false, and part of the verification process will require that person to check all BVN linked accounts.
Also, one may argue that the CJN was not obliged to make a new declaration upon attaining the office of Chief Justice because he remains a Justice of the Supreme Court and is only primus inter pares. Even if I am wrong, and that is for the Courts to interpret, he was certainly not required to make a declaration on being appointed as acting CJN because paragraph 11(1) requires a declaration only after” taking office”. He does not take the office of CJN when he is in an acting position, he is till in his substantive position of Supreme Court Justice and is required to make a declaration only every 4 years.

ASUU Strike Continues.... Lecturers

: Strike Continues Until FG Implements Offer by Proffour (m): 2:00am
The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Thursday said the ongoing strike would not be called off until the Federal Government fully implemented all the offers it made to the union after their last meeting.

The public university lecturers said they were tired of Federal Government’s antics of making unfulfilled promises, insisting that the strike would be called off after they got tangible evidence and concrete actions that the offers made to them by the Federal Government had been implemented.

The National President, ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in an exclusive interview with one of our correspondents in Lagos on Thursday, said the team of the union that met with the government on Tuesday did not reach any agreement with the Federal Government.

Asked when the strike would then be called off, Ogunyemi said, “Our members said they want to see evidence of satisfactory implementation of all they have proposed before the strike can be called off.”

On Tuesday, ASUU met with the Federal Government officials including the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, as well as his Labour and Employment counterpart, Chris Ngige.

After their discussions, Ngige explained what the Federal Government was offering to the union.

He said the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Finance had confirmed with evidence that N15.4bn had been released to public universities.

But ASUU president recalled that last year, the government promised to release funds for the revitalisation of public universities, which was one of the demands of the union, but failed to do so.

Ogunyemi stated, “As for the proposal, it can be disaggregated. There are items there that require implementation. If they are setting up a committee on state universities, and they actually do, it is not something we need to agree on. It is about action.

“If they have implemented it, it is off the list. If the government says it will pay a shortfall of salaries on a certain date, and the date comes and they release the money, it is also implementation. There is no agreement on the matter.

“On the revitalisation fund, we presented to the government that five tranches of N220bn each were outstanding. The government has not said it will release one, even if it is spread over a period of one year. There is no agreement on that. What they are offering is not even up to one tranche.

“Last year, they promised to release the fund but they did not till November when the strike began. Long story short, our members are saying they do not want promises again, what they want is action, implementation or disbursement of funds. The government must act in a way to convince the union that agreement has not been set aside; to show that government has not set aside the agreement, they should release one tranche.”

He explained that in order to forestall a situation ASUU and the government would restart negotiations on arrears of earned academic allowances, both sides agreed that “it would be mainstreamed into the 2019 budget.”

According to him, such an agreement was reached last year, but he said the government failed to honour it.

Ogunyemi stated, “We are going to have a discussion on when to commence renegotiation because there are still grey areas. If the government can substantially address these issues, we will be more confident to face our members on the way forward. For now, the feeler we are getting is that our members do not actually want to accept this government proposal from us.

“They said they would pay the shortfall of salary arrears of what was removed from workers’ salaries. There are 20 universities identified. The money will be available by January 18. It is around the corner and we will see if it will come.”

*4. Do not Support or Wear Political Campaign Uniforms to polling unit*

If you belong to any political party, it may be better that you do not wear political party uniforms. This is so that you do not attract the attention of opposition party members who may be irritated by it. More often than not these party members may be all out to injure others.

*5. Don’t Keep Late Nights*

It is very needful that during election period, you wrap up all you have to do before late night. As a matter of fact most organizations in Nigeria for instance, to a very large extent preach that their workers must not prowl at late night.

*6. Always Listen to the News-:*

One of the ways to be security conscious during election time is to always stay abreast with issues. One of the ways to comfortably do this is by listening to the news always.

*7. Don’t Disclose Who You Will Vote For at the Polls*

During election period, people have different Candidates they pledge allegiance to. Some of them go as far as picking up a fight with those who aren’t in the same camp with them. Therefore it would do you well not to disclose whom you plan to vote for.

*8. Once You Cast Your Vote Go Straight to Your House*

One of the ways to stay secure during elections is by returning home after casting your vote. Staying back, for loitering with other supporters after casting your vote may be detrimental.

*9. Don’t Move About With Huge Cash*

If you have plans to move around with huge amount of cash during election, then you want to consider having a re-think, as this is no time to do such. Miscreants take advantage of the period to rob people off their valuables.

*10. When Driving, Ensure That Your Car Central Lock is activated-:*

Do not drive without making sure that your car central lock is activated. You need to be safe inside your vehicle, rather than unsafe.

*11. Steer Clear Undefined Crowd or Groups of People-:*

It is very needful that you do not associate yourself with undefined crowd or group of people who take delight in analyzing political issues and candidates in public.

*12. If You Must Hang out with Friends, Ensure that it is Safe to Do So*

Should you want to hang out with friends, then you must really be sure that you do this in a very secure area. It has to be in a non-violent area, or an area that is less prone to violence.

*13. Don’t Move About With Expensive Gadgets (Mobile Device)*

You would be doing yourself a world of good, if you do not move around with expensive gadgets. This is so that you do not run into scoundrels who may want to rob you off them.

*14. Minimize Your Family Outings during Elections Period*

It is important that you minimize your Family Outings during election. This is because of the pockets of troubles which may ensue and which makes your family vulnerable to any attack.

*15. Stock up Your Home with Food*

The election period is a period that enforces the stay at home order. Therefore, it is vital to store up the house with all the food stuff and ingredients that is needed so as to avoid incessant outings to the markets and malls.

*16. Have Your Doctor’s Number Handy*

If you do not have a medical person’s details handy, then you may want to know that you need to do this. So that you can call whenever you need a medical assistance during election.

*17. Cast Your Vote Once*

One of the ways that you may be fermenting security trouble is when you decide to vote twice or more. There may be other party candidates that may want to get violent with you. So vote for your candidate just once.

*18. Do Not Talk Recklessly At the Polls-:*

To be safe; it is forbidden to talk recklessly at the polling unit about any candidate or the election process. Doing this may attract some grave consequences.

*19. Celebrate in a Civil Manner*

If after the elections your candidate wins, then it is important that you celebrate in a civil manner. It is no time to begin to paint the town red in a lavish style. Remember, that some folks who are in support of the opposition may not be too happy.

*20. Do Not Partake in Election Violence*

Do not put yourself up to be used by politicians to perpetrate election violence. This is because some opposition people might as well be lurking in the dark to harm those who do this.

*21.Do not argue on social media groups*

As Election period is draws near, enemies are made,  friends delete themselves from groups because of arguments and insults  for or against a preferred candidate. Stop this attitude cos when politicians win or lose they enjoy themselves at *ONE CORNER* while those quarrelling over political parties/ candidates of choice have lost their friends/friendship. A worthy friend is worth keeping at all time.

*Please it is needful that you take to these election security tips to the latter. So that you do not have yourself to blame at the end. Practicing all these tips would only mean that you are relevant to the society.*
