Let Out The Air... The Inconsequential Solution

An engineer in a car manufacturing company designs a world class car. The owner is impressed with the outcome and praised him a lot.

While trying to bring out the car from the manufacturing area to the showroom, they realised that the car is 2 inches taller than the entrance.

The engineer felt bad that he didn't notice this one before creating the car.

The owner was amazed on how to take it outside of the manufacturing area.

The painter said that they can bring out the car and there will be a few scratches on top of the car which could be touched up later on.

The engineer said that they can break the entrance, take the car out, and later re-do it.

The owner was not convinced with any ideas and felt like it is a bad sign to break or scratch

A Watchman was observing all the drama & slowly approached the owner.  He wanted to give an idea if they had no problem.

They wondered what this guy would tell them that the experts could not give.

The watchman said "The car is only a few inches taller than the entrance so, Simply release the air in the tyre, the height of the car will sink and can be easily taken out"...

Everyone clapped!!!

Don't analyse the problems only from an expert point of view alone.

PROFESSOR OLOYEDE A LEADER PAR EXCELLENCE

WHY DO WE PRAISE THE 'OXFORD,HARVARD,YALE' THAN 'LOCAL', WHEN WE ARE PART OF THE 'LOCAL'?

WHAT IS OUR ROLE TO REWRITE/CORRECT THE WRONGS?

WHAT IS OUR ROLE TO INCULCATE GOOD VALUES AS LEADERS IN EVERY SPHERE OF LIFE?

CAN YOU SAY WITHOUT FEAR OR FAVOUR THAT 'I HAVE DONE THE RIGHT THINGS WHILE WORKING TOWARDS THE ORGANISATION GOALS WHERE YOU ARE 'SELECTED' TO LEAD'?

LET DIGEST THE WRITE-UP BELOW 👇

OLOYEDE AND JAMB LEADERSHIP: A METAPHOR FOR POSSIBLE NIGERIA

The Insight                                           By Lateef Adewole

It was a great delight watching the budget defence of the Ministry of Education on Tuesday, when they came to do so before the Joint Committee of Senate on Tertiary Education and Services. The Honourable Minister, Mr. Adamu Adamu led the delegation. He did the major defence.

Then, it was the turn of Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). He made his defence, which blew everyone away. He got what is equivalent of a "standing ovation", in praises. The committee members, Senators and Honourable members could not stop eulogising him. He was appreciated and showered with encomium.

The more interesting part was that, they were not the usual "sycophantic or political" praises as we are used to, especially when they come from one arm of government to another among politicians. They were sincere and based on substance. They were based on the professor's unprecedented performance in a very short time, just about 3 years since he was appointed to that office.

Indeed, Professor Oloyede has continued to distinguish himself in public service, displays exceptional leadership capacity, competence, integrity and he represents the leadership of our dreams for our country, Nigeria. His activities since taken over the leadership of JAMB, a critical examination body to attaining higher education in Nigeria, which shapes the future of the youths, have been nothing but revolutionary. It is ingenious to us, to our country.

His appointment was followed with scathing criticisms, majorly based on religious jingoism, as it is usual with us in Nigeria. Some people accused the president of furthering his "Islamisation agenda" with that, considering that Professor Oloyede is an Islamic scholar and a professor of Islamic and Arabic studies for that matter. He is also the current Secretary General, National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, a position he has occupied since May 2013. However, many forgot or deliberately overlooked the fact that he was once the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin.

Some even derided him as being not suitable to head such a "sensitive and technical" body, being not an expert in that field (technocrat). That he is an "alfa". He is also fully "home grown", with all his major academics from Certificate in Arabic and Islamic studies from the University of Ibadan in 1976/77, to the professorial level (UNILORIN), all achieved within the supposed "dysfunctional" education system in Nigeria. Not Havard, not Cambridge, Not Oxford, not Yate! All from Nigeria. Yet, he has proven his detractors wrong.

He has shown all of us, friends and foes alike, that tribalism or religious inclinations have no bearing on competence. He has been exemplary and phenomenon. He is one of the best appointees of President Buhari since his first term. We hope those who criticised his appointment will be humble enough to apologise to him, or in the least, show appreciation of the works he has been doing in JAMB since his appointment.

But, what has he done to deserve all these accolades? At that Tuesday budget defence, he revealed "uncommon" strides in Nigeria. He shocked everyone present when he told the public that the body is now fully self-funded, with all their capital expenditures and overheads completely taken care of by the body without collecting a kobo from the federal allocations. Despite that, they are remitting 3 billion naira to federation account, apart from another 2 billion naira, which the FG has approved for their capital projects, all from their internally generated revenues of 2019 only. Also, that was in spite of the reduction in the cost of the JAMB registration by 30% for the same year 2019.

That may not be a "new" news. The biggest shock happened after he conducted the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), following his new appointment in October 2016. The results were released in an unprecedented record time of within few days (less than one week) of conducting the exams. This was a departure from the past when candidates had to wait like forever, just to know their scores. He then went ahead to declare a surplus money in excess of 5.1 billion naira! From just one examination?

This was 10,000% (ten thousand percent- not a mistake please!) increase over what the same JAMB declared for previous 7 years (2010 to 2016), which showed about ridiculous 50 million naira only (according to records). Seven years fah! How come? And those at the helms during those years are still walking around free. That is still being investigated. No wonder snakes, rats, lions and all kinds of animals, ate millions of naira in JAMB offices, as seen in the revelation from Benue JAMB office last year.

The following year 2018, he remitted 7.1 billion naira to the federation account after conducting the 2017 UTME. Several innovations have been introduced to curb the menace of cheating in the exams. It is now fully computer based test. He has said the candidates for 2020 exams must provide their National Identity Number (NIN), which is unique to individuals. This is to check the cases of double registrations and impersonations. Most of the whole processes have been computerised and automated for ease of administration. The system has continously been upgraded as well to protect it from cyber-attack. There is more efficiency now in the system.

I took time to x-ray all of these to exemplify what competent leadership can achieve. But how was he able to do all of these in the spate of 3 years? These are lessons we can all learn from there, especially many political office holders at all levels; federal, state and local government.

Is it not shocking to know that majority of the staff who were there in those "locust" years are still the same people who are running the organisation, with exception of some changes and the reorganisational postings? Then, what made all the difference? It is the leadership provided by Professor Oloyede! He made his personality and character to bear on the organisation he heads. The same old staff members realised that a "new sheriff" is truly in town, not a "pretender".

While he faced the fight against corruption in the system head-on, he has been doing it "sincerely and holistically", not punishing some people, while shielding others, based on their tribes, religion, nepotism or closeness to him. He does his fight without fear or favor. That is why it will be difficult to fault him in that respect. He recommends appropriate rewards and punishments based on the merits of each person's case.

Inclusiveness in administration. While the rots discovered, and still being revealed, are enough to have him labelled the staff he met on resumption as corrupt, alienate himself from them or even mistreat them, he never did. All he showed them was that, things will no longer be business as usual. Those who shaped up, continued to enjoy robust relationship with him. Those who are recalcitrant are expected to be shipped out. He carried everybody along. This made those of his staff, who have no skeleton in their cupboard, to trust him.

Capacity. You cannot give what you don't have, as they say. With a career in academics and various management positions in public and private sectors, that spanned almost four decades, he sure has what it takes to make things happen. However, that is not a given. His "personal" abilities and character made all the difference. His period as the VC of Unilorin was a testament. As Senator Egwu said at the budget defence, he turned around the administration of that institution. His legacies there endure till date. He also graduated with a First-Class in his first degree.

Self-discipline. A critical attribute that is lacking in many of us, especially our leaders, is self-discipline. They often forget the "temporariness" of power and office. They live and act recklessly many times, without a care in this world. When a leader cannot discipline himself or herself, he or she has no moral right to demand same from his or her subordinates or followers. But in Nigeria, that is not applicable. We, too many times, see cups calling the kettles black. Leadership should be by example rather than precept.

Focus. In spite of all the "shades" thrown at him after his appointment, Professor Ishaq Oloyede never got distracted. He has his mind set on his goals and he pursued them vigorously with all his might and being. Those working with him had no choice but to rise up to the occasion. That is the result of which we are seeing. He did not abandon his current responsibility and begin to blame all the past registrars of the body for everything that is wrong there. He simply moved on and faced his job squarely.

Shared commendation. I have listened to Professor Oloyede's interviews a few times. While everyone talks about him and his achievements, he never missed any opportunity to publicly acknowledge the contributions, supports and dedication of all the members of staff of the organisation. Likewise his board members. He never took the accolades alone. This encourages his staff continue to do more.

In all of these, while it looks so bleak like Nigeria may never move forward, the time of Professor Ishaq Oloyede at the JAMB leadership shows that, if we resolve to make changes for better, Nigeria can actually move forward, even beyond our imaginations. All that we all need is the collective will to do the right things, and eschew hatred, tribalism, cronyism, nepotism and religious divisiveness. And it all starts by always doing our best to put our best foot forward, whether for elective or appointive positions.

President Buhari got this one very right. God bless him for that. And we can only wish and hope that he will be guided while making many more appointments, going forward. The JAMB should be a case study and a temple for him. Many of his appointees were disappointment, while he continues to retain them or reappointed them for another term, more at the expense of the wellbeing of Nigeria and Nigerians. Current security situation in Nigeria comes to mind.

Professor Ishaq Oloyede is not without his own flaws, just like any normal human being, but, where those flaws are dwarfed by his good sides, the result will be positive. Many nigerians are very proud of him and we wish him greater success as he move JAMB to the "next level"!

May God continue to guide us aright.

God Bless Nigeria.

LASG TO PAY ABOVE N30000 MINIMUM WAGE

BREAKING: LAGOS READY TO PAY ABOVE N30,000 MINIMUM WAGE - SANWO-OLU

…Labour Leaders Hail Lagos Governor For Fulfilling Promises

Better time awaits workers in Lagos State, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu discloses, on Tuesday, that the State is ready to pay more than the N30,000 benchmark for the National Minimum Wage.

Sanwo-Olu said the implementation of the new minimum wage payment would take off when the Federal Government and labour unions conclude their negotiations. The State, he said, was drawing up its finances and creating additional revenue sources that would enable the Government sustain the new minimum wage payment.

The Governor made these disclosures during a meeting with Organised Labour Unions held at the State House in Alausa.

Sanwo-Olu said his Government understood the day-by-day challenges being faced by workers in the State to do their tasks, which informed the decision by his administration to pay more than the N30,000 minimum wage benchmark.

The addition, the Governor pointed out, was to motivate workers and encourage them to cope with challenges that may hinder their productivity.

He said: “As a government, we take the issue of minimum wage very seriously. We know how important and germane it is to the wellbeing of our people. We are technically ready to implement the new minimum wage. I made commitment during my previous interactions with the labour unions before my assumption of office and I am still keeping to the promise made. However little it is, we will certainly pay more than N30,000 minimum wage.

“We understand the position Lagos occupies and we understand the challenges workers are facing in Lagos. If other states can raise up to that amount, I believe Lagos needs to show a bit more to appreciate workers’ contribution to the growth of our State.”

During interaction with the labour unions’ leaders, Sanwo-Olu listened to various demands of the workers, which included arrears of workers’ medical allowance, introduction of premium insurance for the workforce, timely pension payment for retired workers, mortgage scheme for housing, befitting labour secretariat and representation of workers’ unions in MDA boards’ appointments.

Sanwo-Olu said he had directed the Commissioner for Finance to look into the unpaid arrears of workers’ medical allowance, with a charge to clear the backlog and make payment to the affected workers. The Governor added that the State was planning to absorb its entire workforce in the recently introduced health insurance scheme, observing that the Ministry of Health was harmonising the modality to ensure all workers were covered in the scheme.

The Government, Sanwo-Olu said, will collaborate with the Organised Labour Unions to float a post-retirement housing scheme that would enable workers of all cadres to apply and acquire permanent homes after leaving the service. Lagos, the Governor promised, would be donating land for the purpose, while the labour unions would source for finance to develop the scheme.

In addition, Sanwo-olu said his government had approved discounted rent for the workers occupying State-owned apartments. This, he said, is part of the welfare programmes introduced by his Government to improve workers’ productivity.

The Governor said his administration had started to tackle challenges limiting the workers’ productivity, including massive rehabilitation of critical highways across the state to reduce travel time and diffuse road congestion.

It was a moment of excitement for the union leaders, following the Governor’s pronouncement to pay above the minimum wage. They described Sanwo-Olu as “a listening leader” and observed that the Governor had started to fulfil promises made to the unions in the build up to the 2019 elections.

Chairman of Lagos Council of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Gbenga Ekundayo, listed re-introduction of Town Hall meeting with labour unions and appointment of more women into the State’s cabinet as part of the promises fulfilled by the Governor.

Ekundayo informed the Governor that the labour unions had been meeting to develop a framework that would make the Government to capture traders in informal sector in the tax net. He assured that the labour unions’ recommendations would be submitted to the Head of Service (HOS), Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, in the coming weeks.

Chairperson of the Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Funmi Sessi, described workers as government’s partners in progress, while appreciating Sanwo-Olu for keeping some of his promises with the workers’ unions.

She promised that the Organised Labour would continue to support the Government’s efforts towards improving the wellbeing of the residents and workers in the State.

Sanwo-Olu also met with members of Lagos State Public Service Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) led by Comrade Rasak Falade at the State House.

Top government officials who joined Gov. Sanwo-Olu at both meetings with Organised Labour Unions’ leaders included the Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pension, Mrs. Ajibola Ponnle, and HOS, Mr. Muri-Okunola, among others.

The Mother,'s Magic

WEDNESDAY FRANK TALK

I had three children , two girls and one boy, by the grace of God I sent them all to University level as a matter of fact my last boy had a Master degree .  Myself and my wife are retired civil servants ,while in active service I used to pay my children school fees , buy their textbook and handouts and pay for their house rent , even my last child and only boy was sponsored to China for his Masters degree by me, my only wife has always been responsible for their feeding and others while in school .

The two ladies are happily married and they send money to us from time to time ,however my boy  comes home every month gives me five thousand and gives my wife two thousand and aside this he will hand over a loaf of bread to my wife , this has been ongoing in the last four years .

Last month Adebayo came home as usual, his wife accompanied him with lots of food stuffs and a prepared fresh fish soup that will last myself and my wife for another four to five days , incidentally my wife had travelled to Ibadan for a funeral ceremony . When leaving, Adebayo gave me five thousand as usual and gave me two thousand for his mother. After some time he handed me a loaf of bread telling me that I should give it to his mother as he has been trying to call her but the network is bad ,I prayed for him and his wife and they departed .

About an hour later I felt like eating something ,I took part of the fresh fish soup and picked the loaf of bread to eat , on removing the nylon of the bread I realised that a sum of twenty thousand naira was neatly inserted inside the bread , disturbed and concerned I picked my phone to call Adebayo but on a second thought I decided to keep calm ,hence I took my food and slept off . When my wife came I gave her the two thousand and told her Adebayo gave me a loaf of bread and I had eaten part of it , I noticed her sudden restlessness as she took the bread and examined it , after sometimes she kept mute and her attitude suddenly changed in the house .

All through the night I kept on thinking , does it means that all while Adebayo has been given his mother an extra twenty thousand without me knowing about it ?  Should I opened up a discussion with my wife ? Should I call Adebayo to confirm ? Should I keep a sealed lip ?

*OVER TO YOU DADDIES*

A True Story

TRUE STORY

*Many years ago, on a Christmas Day, a very Rich Man who had no wife,  no children, no other family members, decided to invite all the employees of his Mansion to dinner.*

*He called the staff and asked them to sit at the table.*
*In front of everyone there was a BIBLE and a small sum of MONEY.*

*After everyone had their dinner, the Rich Man asked:*

*"What would you prefer to receive as a gift: this BIBLE or this MONEY?*

*Do not be shy, you can choose what you want. "*

*THE SECURITY GUARD WAS THE FIRST TO REACT:*

*"Sir, I would love to receive the Bible, but since I have not learned to read, the money will be more useful to me."*

*THE GARDENER WAS THE SECOND TO SPEAK:*

*"Sir, my wife is very sick and that's why I need more money, otherwise I would choose the Bible for sure!"*

*THE THIRD WAS THE COOK:*

*"Sir, I like reading to tell the truth, it's one of the things I like to do, but I work so hard that I never find time to flip through a magazine, let alone the Bible. I will take the money. "*

*IN THE END, IT WAS THE turn OF THE BOY WHO TAKES CARE OF THE ANIMALS OF THE MANSION.*

*And as the Rich Gentleman of the villa knew that the boy's family was very poor, he stepped forward and said:*

*"Surely you too want the money, do you not?  So that  you can buy food to have a good dinner at home and buy new shoes? "*

BUT THE BOY,
as for him, surprised everybody with his answer:

*"It would not hurt to buy a turkey and other tasty food to share with my parents and siblings. I also need a pair of new shoes because mine are very old. Even so, I will choose the Bible because  I have always wanted one. My mother taught me that the Word of God is worth more than gold and that it is more tasty than a honeycomb."*

*After receiving the Bible, the boy immediately opened it.  He found TWO ENVELOPES inside.*

*In the first, there was a CHEQUE  that was 10 TIMES  higher than the money on the table.*
*In the second, there was a DOCUMENT (Will)  that made him (whoever would choose the Bible), the HEIR to all the wealth of the Rich Man!*

*Faced with the Boy's emotion and the astonishment of the other servants, the Rich Gentleman opened one of  the Bibles and read aloud so that everyone could hear:*

*Psalms 19:7-10:*

*The law of the LORD is perfect, it restores the soul;*

*The testimony of the Lord is true, he makes wise the ignorant.*

*The ordinances of the LORD are righteous, they rejoice the heart;*

*The commandments of the Lord are pure, they light up the eyes.*

*The fear of the Lord is pure, it subsists forever;*

*The judgments of the Lord are true, they are all just.*

*They are more precious than gold, than a lot of fine gold; They are sweeter than honey, than the one that pours rays.*

*May God give us Wisdom and help us always make the Right Choice.*

So what do you Choose? To share this story or Ignore it?
