Two Mid Term Breaks For Nigerian Schools

*Mid-Term Break For Schools During 2019 General Elections* –
*READ TO GET PREPARED.*

The Federal Ministry of Education has made arrangements for mid-term break for all the citadel of learnings nationwide to embark on mid-term break for the purpose of general elections coming up this month.
At the meeting with the Ministry of Education today it was agreed schools will have 2 “half term breaks” to cover both the presidential and gubernatorial elections:

*First break from February 13th – February 18th.* Classes resume on Tuesday, February 19th. Boarders return on the evening of February 18th.

*Second “half-term break” from February 28th – March 4th.* Classes resume on Tuesday, March 5th. Boarders return on the evening of March 4th.

Some Don't For Teachers

10 great Don’ts for teachers.

1.Don’t send a student away from your class during lesson as a result of bad behaviour. You cannot account for what the child is doing outside and this gonna work against you if a major incident happens.
2.Don’t touch a child physically  especially in sec schools.If the child claims you touched his/her private parts, you cannot deny it.
3.Don’t give assignment you know you won’t have time to mark. Unmarked assignments in your students’ notes show that you are incompetent and unprofessional.
4.Don’t use your school internet to send private and confidential emails. They can be tracked by school management ICT dept.
5. Don’t just teach only within the periods given to you if you are preparing students (SS3 and JS3) for external examinations. Create more contact  time for your students.
6.Don’t stay with a student alone in a class , lab, office etc. Child protection policy forbids it. Avoid “one corner” teaching.
7.Don’t ask a child to kneel down for too long a time. He or she might have had kneel surgery or serious dislocation which you do not know hitherto.
8. Don’t not conspire against your line manager(HOD,Academic heads et al)
9.Don’t write “seen” or “checked” on a child’s note even though you did not actually check.
10.Don’t treat students unequally.There should be nothing like your favourite students. Every child matters.

Prevention Of Bullying In Schools

*Prevention at School*

Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn. The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. There are a number of things school staff can do to make schools safer and prevent bullying.

Training school staff and students to prevent and address bullying can help sustain bullying prevention efforts over time. There are no federal mandates for bullying curricula or staff training. The following are some examples of options schools can consider.

Activities to Teach Students About Bullying

 Schools can incorporate the topic of bullying prevention in lessons and activities. Examples of activities to teach about bullying include:

*Internet or library research, such as looking up types of bullying, how to prevent it, and how kids should respond.*

*Presentations, such as a speech or role-play on stopping bullying*

*Discussions about topics like reporting bullying, Creative writing, such as a poem speaking out against bullying or a story or skit teaching bystanders how to help, Artistic works, such as a collage about respect or the effects of bullying*

*Staff Training on Bullying Prevention*

To ensure that bullying prevention efforts are successful, all school staff need to be trained on what bullying is, what the school’s policies and rules are, and how to enforce the rules. Training may take many forms: staff meetings, one-day training sessions, and teaching through modeling preferred behavior. Schools may choose any combination of these training options based on available funding, staff resources, and time.

*What Kids Can Do*

Are you being bullied? Do you see bullying at your school? There are things you can do to keep yourself and the kids you know safe from bullying.

*Treat Everyone with Respect*

Nobody should be mean to others.

Stop and think before you say or do something that could hurt someone. If you feel like being mean to someone, find something else to do. Play a game, watch TV, or talk to a friend. Talk to an adult you trust. They can help you find ways to be nicer to others. Keep in mind that everyone is different. Not better or worse. Just different.  If you think you have bullied someone in the past, apologize. Everyone feels better.

*What to Do If You’re Bullied*

There are things you can do if you are being bullied:

Look at the kid bullying you and tell him or her to stop in a calm, clear voice. You can also try to laugh it off. This works best if joking is easy for you. It could catch the kid bullying you off guard. If speaking up seems too hard or not safe, walk away and stay away. Don’t fight back. Find an adult to stop the bullying on the spot.

Talk to an adult you trust. Don’t keep your feelings inside. Telling someone can help you feel less alone. They can help you make a plan to stop the bullying. Stay away from places where bullying happens. Stay near adults and other kids. Most bullying happens when adults aren’t around.

The Dangerous Effects Of Bullying

The Mysterious Suicide of 12yr Old William.

Dear parent, dear mom...you need to read this story
to prevent this from happening to your child.

This is a story all parents should learn from.

It is a very sad one.

Just follow carefully and read every letter till the end.

This happened 5yrs ago in Georgia, USA.

There was a little boy, William, in his first year in high school
(that is like JSS1 here in Nigeria)

William was a shy boy. He had so little confidence in his own abilities as a result of his small stature, and a rare disease that made his head bigger than normal.

Williams classmates used to laugh a lot a William, and would call him
"Head Master, Head Boy, Head of Horror.."

All sorts of names - but these kids were just being kids.

They had no idea they were damaging William.

William would go to school everyday with fears in his heart,
and he would return home with tears in his eyes.

Such a poor and lonely boy, nobody wanted to be his friend, except Samantha, his
neighbour.

Little William's parents were not helping matters as well.

At home, Williams parents were always complaining about his poor grades.

"You had an F in Maths again?! What are you thinking with your head?

Can't you see Andrew? He's also your mate. Why can't you just be like him for once"

And one Friday...the worst happened.

4 boys met William in class, and
they started abusing him. When he tried to defend himself, they beat him up.

Fed up with life, William went to the middle of the road, and...

He ran into an oncoming truck.

Many people rushed to the scene, and they rushed William to the hospital.

But he died before they got there.

A letter was found in his bag:

It said - "Mom and dad, I'm sorry for not being the son you hoped I would be. I truly hope you find another son who makes you proud. Love, William."

It was a hearbreaking thing to read..

William's mother read the letter and cried her heart out - She was totally torn to pieces..

She had failed her only son. The community had failed William as well.

Listen dear parent, bullying is real and it could come in so many forms..

It could be physical or mental.

Your kids may be bullied in school either by their peers or teachers.

Let me explain - if another kid likes to beat up your kid, for no reason, this is physical bullying.

If they abuse your child, this is emotional bullying.

If a teacher asks other kids to sing an abusive song to your child for failing a class assignment, this is
emotional bullying.

As a parent, if you constantly compare your kids to other children, you are emotionally bullying them.

A example is this statement - "Can't you see Mary? Does she have two heads? Is she not
your mate? Can't you just be like her? You this stubborn girl"

A better way to say this is - "Listen Ann, I know you're a good girl. But I want you to do better, just like your friend, Mary. Do you promise me to do better next time?"

This way your child would feel more confident in her ability.

If your child is being bullied, please call a meeting with the parent of that child, and have a discussion with them.

If a teacher is bullying your child, by calling him names for failing an assignment or a test, please see them and ask them to stop it. This is really dangerous.

If your child is the one bullying people, please don't just think he would outgrow it, help him see that he is causing damage to another person.

Kids who are being bullied would have the following -

Depression and anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy. These issues may persist into adulthood.

Kids who bully are most likely to -

 - Abuse alcohol and other drugs in adolescence and as adults
 - Get into fights, vandalize property, and drop out of school
 - Engage in early sexual activity
 - Have criminal convictions and traffic citations as adults
 - Be abusive toward their romantic partners, spouses, or children as adults

1) That the Summit of the Forum of Nigerian Elders and Leaders held at Sheraton Hotel Abuja on Sunday, 3rd January, 2019. The Summit had in attendance foremost Elders and Leaders of Thought from all the six-geopolitical zones and the respective socio-cultural groups, (Afenifere for the South west, Middle Belt Forum for the North Central, Ohaneaze Ndigbo for the South East, Northern Elders Forum for the Northern Nigeria and Pan Niger Delta Forum for the South South).
2) The Forum expressed it goodwill toward the Vice President, His Excellency Professor Yemi Osibanjo, SAN, GCON who survived a helicopter crash on 2nd January, 2019
3) Recognizing that the Forum of Nigerian Elders and Leaders represents the most genuine commitment of leading socio-cultural groups in Nigeria to work together to find solutions to national challenges, support the cause for good governance and contribute towards improving national unity, security and economic development of all Nigerians.
4) Having maintained informed vigilance over all developments towards the forthcoming 2019 General Elections, Leaders of the Forum had outlined their views on the qualities of leaders that should aspire and seek our supports and votes. These include a demonstrated commitment to the democratic process, a transparent willingness to address the structural foundations of our nation in a manner that should ensure greater political unity and economic development for all Nigerians, and the courage and competence to secure the nation from multiple and varied threats among others.
5) Having noted the continued drift of the country in the direction of insecurity, deep divisions, tyranny as shown in the recent unilateral sacking of the Chief Justice of the country against all globally known democratic ethos, etc
6) Having closely followed the competition for mandates within the various political parties as well the campaigns for the votes of Nigerians so far, including four weeks of close interactions and interviews with nearly all the aspirants for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the various parties. We make the following observations:
(a)The forthcoming elections are vital to our desire to live together in a democratic nation that reflects our aspirations, of peaceful co-existence, mutual respect, practice of true federalism.
(b) There is solid national and international consensus that the 2019 elections must be credible, and improve on the quality of the 2019 elections;
(c) There is assurance from INEC of its willingness and ability to conduct free and fair elections, but it must be watched very closely and supported to set new, higher standards in election management and that undue pressure from any quarters does not truncate its efforts;
(d) The political and security environments are central to the conduct of credible and peaceful elections. So far, the pronouncements of major contenders regarding the use of violence and willingness to accept outcomes of credible elections is being severely tested in practice. The disposition of state agents that have responsibility for securing our votes has also been a major source of concern;
(e) Civil society in Nigeria and the international community have made commendable contributions towards improving the integrity and security of the ballot. It is vital that they continue to play the roles of informed vigilantes and partners in our nation’s search for deeper roots for our democratic traditions;
(f) The media needs to do more to meet the expectations of Nigerians in terms of objectivity and capacities to set agendas and exercise effective oversight over all matters related to the forthcoming elections. The Nigerian media has a rich history of rising to the occasion when the country faces the kind of situation we are in today;
(g) These last few days before the first set of elections will test the Federal Government’s undertaking and assurances to protect Nigerians as they prepare to participate in the elections, as well as create a level playing field for all parties and candidates. The Federal Government must therefore ensure that no one, no matter their roles or status should be allowed to behave as if there are no consequences for subverting the electoral process or threatening the rights of all Nigerians to participate in free and fair elections.
6) Conscious of its mandate and after exhaustive deliberation the Forum:
(a) Reminds all Nigerians that the forthcoming elections are about the type of nation we need as adults and those for whom we have responsibilities. Not since 1999 have we been challenged with the power to shape our future as these elections do;
(b) Reminds the nation of its earlier position that the best candidates who should lead us are those who have the following qualities:
(i) A clear understanding of the nation’s security challenges and a strong will and commitment to tackle them decisively and comprehensively;
(ii) Capable, intelligent, physically fit and mentally alert persons that understand the issues and will once more restore Nigerian international standing and respect.
(iii) A strong will to improve the quality of governance, Including the rebuilding of key and strategic national institutions; to ensure inclusiveness is reflected in all political and governance matters; to fight corruption as a national scourge with transparent commitment; and to pursue policies that address the needs of a nation with a huge population of young people who need quality education and opportunities to participate as productive adults in a thriving economy;
(7) The Forum, having concluded a thorough evaluation of all candidates aspiring to lead our nation thorough its current challenges and engineer genuine national rebirth, has decided to note:
a) That several of the younger candidates who presented themselves for the Presidential election, demonstrated great capacity and promise to lead this country creditably and ensure that it engenders proper social and economic development to its people.
b) However most of these qualified younger candidates do not, at present, have the machinery and structures to win a Presidential election in Nigeria at present.
c) Therefore, adopts the candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Consensus Candidate for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as he has demonstrated the deep understanding of the critical need of the country at this time and posseses the capacity to proffer clear solutions in that respect.
d) Calls on all Nigerians, irrespective of religious or ethnic background, to stand in unison and vote for Atiku Abubakar on the 16th February 2019 and ensure
