God Is Awesome

He sat in court, holding his hand in his head and weeping quietly. Those around him looked at him in pity and those who did not know the reason for this, wondered why a grown man was weeping openly.

For Mr. James Jackson, his life had just crumbled before him like a pack of cards.

He who had two sons that were born on the same day, had suddenly become childless.

Two years ago, the first of the twin was brutally murdered, while he was being inducted alongside others as a medical doctor.

Today, the court sentenced his only surviving son and child to die by the hangman’s noose.

Why? He had pulled the trigger that sent his twin brother and only sibling to his untimely grave. He murdered his own blood in cold blood.

He had simply walked into the venue of the event, shot into the air to attract attention and walked over to where his brother was sitting.

Whilst the poor twin brother looked at him in shock and confusion, he shot him point blank in the head. The death was instant.

After committing this heinous act, he surrendered himself to the police. Before his arraignment and throughout the trial, he never denied the offence.

He only told a story that broke many hearts, but could not justify murder in the eyes of the law.

His brother had been the shining star of the family. Academically, he was brilliant and in the areas of sports, he was a force to reckon with. He excelled in everything he did and was the kind of child every parent prayed for. Despite these qualities, he was quiet and humble.

The convicted brother on the other hand was an average student, who had no interest in sports. His only area of excellence was drawing and painting. He was an extrovert and a social butterfly.

It did not come as a surprise when the parents doted on  the intelligent son and did all they could to make him happy. They were proud of him and flaunted his achievements at every available opportunity.

The convicted brother did not make any fuss but did what he could to please his parents. His drawing skills also earned him awards but the parents were not impressed by this.

After their secondary school education, the intelligent son went on study medicine and the second was offered fine Arts.

One day, they had gone to school as usual but the convicted son came back to pick an item he forgot at home. There was nobody in sight when he walked into the house. However, he heard voices from his father's study. The door was slightly open and he thought he should walk in and greet them.

That thought died when he saw that his parents were discussing with the family lawyer about drafting his father's will. He stood still to eavesdrop and what he heard shattered his heart to pieces.

His father had 6 choice properties and some pieces of land in the village. His brilliant brother was to get 4, his mother was to get 1 and he was to get 1 - the smallest among the properties.

When the lawyer protested the unfair sharing formula, his father stood his ground and said the convicted brother ought to be happy with the house. He added that the house was to ensure that he had a place to lay his head while engaging in the unprofitable profession of drawings and paintings. His mother supported his father's views.

The young man walked away with one thought in mind: he was going to cause his parents unimaginable pain.

He pretended all was well, even while planning a revenge mission that was going to affect everyone around him.

3 years later, he got the perfect opportunity to carry out his plan. Immediately he heard that his brother had passed his final exams and was going to be inducted into the medical profession, he perfected his plan.

He did not attend the induction exercise on the ground that he was busy. But immediately after the induction exercise and whilst closing speeches were ongoing, he walked into the hall and shot his brother in the head.

The incident took place in the presence of more than a hundred people. Thus there was no means of escape.

In the course of trial, their mother passed away as a result of heart break and high blood pressure.

Today, he was sentenced to death and their father was left to bear the consequences of their actions.

Children are gifts from God, but they come in different packages- different personalities, behaviours, IQ level etc.

Learn to accept them the way they are; build up their natural talent, help them acquire skills that will be of use in the future; teach them how to be better persons but never show favouritism.

Equality, they say is equity.

You cannot sow rivalry and expect peace in your home. There may be a facade of brotherliness but one day, it will crack and the rot beneath will be exposed.

Don't turn your family to a battle field and then blame your enemies, village people or the worst culprit-  the devil.

Treat your children equally and teach them to do same.

Do have a wonderful week

Dangers Of Favouritism In Schools

*FAVOURITISM IN CLASSROOM  MANAGEMENT*

*What is Favouritism in Classroom Management?*

This is when a learner gains favor in the eyes of the Teacher by receiving preferential treatments which are not extended to other learners by the Teacher within and outside the classroom environment.

Over the years, Teachers have demonstrated the act of favouritism and been trained and warned not to show favouritism in verbal and non-verbal ways. This is because pupils/students are quick to detect such signals or act of favouritism.

*Who is a Teacher's Pet?*

Is a pupil/student who has gained favour in the eyes of the Teacher within and outside the classroom environment.

There are still cases when other pupils/students notice that there is *"Teacher's Pet"* in the class; the one who is the apple of the eye, the one which gets the Teachers attention, the one who is trusted more than anyone else. Being professional, how can Teachers ensure fairness, especially when calling on pupils/students, grading, rewarding, and interacting in general with them.

*How To Avoid Favouritism In Classroom*

The following are suggested ways to avoid favouritism:

1) *Leave no child behind*.
Make sure that every child gets called and everyone in the class has had a turn.

2) *Teachers should examine their emotions/behavior*.
Teachers may consider these questions:

a) Do I use the same amount of time for answers from high achievers as I do from low achievers?

b) Do I praise all pupils/students and offer individual help, no matter what the child's level?

c) Do I spend equal time standing in proximity to high achievers as I do to low achievers?

d) Do I consciously or unconsciously smile at a few selected learners while teaching?

e) Do I know the names of all the pupils/students in the classroom apart from a few pupils/students' names?

3) *Find something to praise in every pupil/student*.
A pupil or student may not be good at academics but he/she may be doing well in sports or other co-curricular activities. A child may not be that bright but if he/she shows desirable values, by then, he/she deserves to be praised.

4) *Teachers must ensure fair assessment and grading of learners*

5) *Teachers must give equal quality time to all pupils/students while teaching*

6) *Teachers should have control of their emotions*.
Teachers need to be aware of their emotions towards various pupils/students and not let those emotions interfere with the learning experience.

*Reasons Why Teachers Should Not Play Favourite*

1) *The child that is the favourite will be isolated from his/her peers.*
The favorite pupil/student is not going to be liked by your other pupils/students.

2) *You make prior judgements about children*.
When you have favourites and pay attention to them alone in classroom, what you are doing is making judgements about the other pupils/students in your class without giving them a chance to prove themselves.

3) *Undue attention and opportunities given to children who may or may not deserve it*.
You may become blind to reasons as to why they are your favourites, when you find yourself blindly trusting them or giving them opportunities without even considering your other pupils/students, maybe it is time to evaluate why they are your favourites.

4) *The favourites might not be part of the learning process since the Teacher has a soft sport for them.*
The Teacher tends to ignore areas that require maximum attention and correction in the learning process of the child.

5) *Your teaching style becomes biased.*
When you have favourites, your teaching style changes accordingly. You will only focus on the pupils/students you want too, not the other pupils/students too.
One of the main jobs of a Teacher is to teach everyone equally, irrespective of likes or dislikes.

Favouritism is one of the major practices that has killed Self Esteem of Children at the expense of their Future.

*why do favouritism exist in class/school?*

Most teachers and school personnel engaged in the practice of favouritism for these reasons:

1. *Most intelligent students in class*

Most teachers tend to show undue favour or attention to students that are brilliant in class and so tends to value them more than the others, forgetting that intelligence varies in individuals, and every child is intelligent in different ways and areas.

Every child should be given equal opportunity to show case his/her intelligence/talent.

2. *Student whose parent give more gifts or expensive gifts*

Some teachers mar their sense of judgement by physical materials and therefore ridicule their personalities and lose their honour in the presence of the students and even parents.

This is unprofessional and should not be encouraged in schools.

3. *The child of the School Owner (if private) or influential Parents*

Some teachers will give attention or allow the children of the school owner/ influential parents to get away with some things that other children in class are not allowed to.
They even give positions to them in place of other most preferred/qualified students.

This is unethical and against the right of the other students in class/ school.

As executives, teachers and administrators, we must ensure this does not have root in our schools and classrooms.

Every student in your school is there by right of payment of school fee and is entitled to equal right and best treatment.

Treating every student right is also a good way to market your school and project your school as save for nurturing student's potential.

*Let's be fair, friendly and firm in relating with the foremost customer in our care - The student*

Be As Kind As You Will Like To Receive

You may have seen this story b4 but each time I read it over it makes a deeper meaning to me. So I send to you again may be it might touch you d way I'm touched.

One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.

Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry.

He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill which only fear can put in you.

He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.”

Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough.

Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.

As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid.

Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped.

Bryan never thought twice about being paid.

This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.

He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, “And think of me.”

He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.

A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan .

After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin.

There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: “You don’t owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.”

Under the napkin were four more $100 bills.

Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard….

She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, “Everything’s going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.”

There is an old saying “What goes around comes around.” Today, I sent you this story, and I’m asking you to pass it on .. Let this light shine.

Don’t delete it, don’t return it. Simply, pass this on to a friend

Good friends are like stars….You don’t always see them, but you know they are always there.

Do good to all people, don't lose your good attitude, it pays heavily.

Detail Lectures On Prostrate Disease

The Prostate Gland and its effect on us , (men only).
Read it and apply, esp the part on diet.
Useful for all MEN over-40:

A useful article / talk on Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) or in simple terms, Enlarged Prostate. Diet is the most important part of this talk which is something within our control; and it works.

FULL TEXT OF PROSTATE HEALTH AWARENESS LECTURE

MEN MUST READ

Gentlemen,

I am here to speak with you on Prostate. The topic is misleading. Is prostate strictly for men? Yes, ONLY men have prostate and ONLY men over 40 years but the healthcare enlightenment is for everyone. There is no woman who does not know a man 40 years and above, father, uncle, brother, son, friend, neighbour, colleague...

Essentially what I will be doing today is health promotion. Responsible health promotion must provide three things:

1. Information
2. Reassurance
3. A plan of action.

Let me start with a background on prostate health.

Everyone has a pair of kidneys. The job of the kidney is to remove waste. It is the LAWMA (waste management company) of your body. Everyday your blood passes through the kidney several times to be filtered. As the blood is filtered, urine is formed and stored in a temporary storage tank called the urinary bladder.

If there were to be no urinary bladder, as a man walks on the road, urine will be dropping.

Now think of the plumbing work in your house. Think of the urinary bladder as the overhead storage tank. From the storage tank, a good plumber will run pipes to other parts of the house, including the kitchen. God in His wisdom ran pipes from our urinary bladder to the tip of the penis. The pipe is called the urethra. Just below the bladder and surrounding the urethra is a little organ called the prostate gland.

The prostate gland is the size of a walnut and weighs about 20grams. Its job is to make the seminal fluid which is stored in the seminal vesicle. During sexual intercourse, seminal fluid comes down the urethra and mixes with the sperms produced in the testicles to form the semen. So semen technically is not sperm. It is sperm + seminal fluid. The seminal fluid lubricates the sperm.

After age 40, for reasons that may be hormonal, the prostate gland begins to enlarge. From 20 grams it may grow to almost 100 grams. As it enlarges, it squeezes the urethra and the man begins to notice changes in the way he urinates.

If you have a son under 10, if he has a little mischief like we all did at that age, when he comes out to urinate, he can target the ceiling and the jet will hit target. Call his father to do same, wahala dey. His urine stream is weak, cannot travel a long distance and sometimes may come straight down on his legs. So he may need to stand in awkward position to urinate.

Not many men will be worried their urine stream cannot hit the ceiling. Toilets are on the floor and not on the ceiling. But other symptoms begin to show.

TERMINAL DRIPPLING:

The man begins to notice that after urinating and repacking, urine still drops on his pants. This is the reason why after an older man urinates, he has to ring bell. A younger man simply delivers to the last drop and walks away. Just see an older man coming from the bathroom. Sometimes he may clutch the newspaper closely to hide the urine stains, particularly on plain colored trousers.

HESISTANCY

At this point you wait longer for the urine flow to start. There are 2 valves that must open for you to urinate – the internal and external sphincters. Both open but because of obstructions in the urethra, you wait longer for the flow to start.

INCOMPLETE EMPTYING

You have this feeling immediately after urinating that there is still something left.

As all these things happen, the bladder begins to work harder to compensate for the obstruction in the urethra. The frequency of urination goes up. Urgency sets in. Sometimes you have to practically run into the toilet. Nocturia also becomes common. You wake up more than 2 times at night to urinate. Your wife begins to complain.

Men being men may not talk to anyone even at this point. Then the more serious complications start.

Stored urine gets infected and there may be burning sensation when urinating.

Stored urine forms crystals. Crystals come together to form stone either in the bladder or in the kidney. Stones may block the urethra.

Chronic urinary retention sets in. The bladder stores more and more urine. The size of the bladder is 40 - 60cl. A bottle of coke is 50cl. As the bladder stores more urine it can enlarge up to 300cl. An overfilled bladder may leak and this leads to wetting / urinary incontinence. Also the volume may put pressure on the kidney and may lead to kidney damage.

What may likely bring the man to hospital is acute urinary retention. He wakes up one day and he is not able to pass urine.

Everything I have described above is associated with prostate enlargement, technically called benign prostate hyperplasia.

There are other diseases of the prostate like:

1. Prostatitis – inflammation of the prostate

2. Prostate cancer – cancer of the prostate.

This discussion is on prostate enlargement.

I have bad news and good news.

The bad news is that everyman will have prostate enlargement if he lives long enough.

The good news is that there are life style changes that can help the man after 40 to maintain optimum prostate health.

NUTRITION

Look at what you eat. 33% of all cancers, according to the US National Cancer Institute is related to what we eat.
Red meat everyday triples your chances of prostate disease. Milk everyday doubles your risk. Not taking fruits / vegetables daily quadruples your risk.

Tomatoes are very good for men. If that is the only thing your wife can present in the evening, eat it with joy. It has loads of lycopene. Lycopene is the most potent natural antioxidant.
Foods that are rich in zinc are also good for men. We recommend pumpkin seeds (ugbogulu).
Zinc is about the most essential element for male sexuality and fertility.

Men need more zinc than women. Every time a man ejaculates he loses 15mg of zinc. Zinc is also important for alcohol metabolism. Your liver needs zinc to metabolize alcohol.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

As men begin to have urinary symptoms associated with prostate enlargement, it is important they look at alcohol consumption. More fluid in means more fluid out.

Drink less. Drink slowly.

EXERCISE

Exercise helps build the muscle tone. Every man should exercise. Men over 40 should avoid high impact exercise like jogging. It puts pressure on the knees. Cycling is bad news for the prostate. We recommend brisk walking.

SITTING
When we sit, two-third of our weight rests on the pelvic bones. Men who sit longer are more prone to prostate symptoms. Do not sit for long hours. Walk around as often as you can. Sit on comfortable chairs. We recommend a divided saddle chair if you must sit long hours.

DRESSING

Men should avoid tight underwear. It impacts circulation around the groin and heats it up a bit. While the physiological temperature is 37 degrees, the groin has an optimal temperature of about 33 degrees. Pant is a no - no for men. Wear boxers.  Wear breathable clothing.

SMOKING

Avoid smoking. It affects blood vessels and impact circulation around the groin.

SEX

Regular sex is good for the prostate.

Celibates are more pronenn to prostate illness. While celibacy is a moral decision, it is not a biological adaptation. Your prostate gland is designed to empty its contents regularly.
__________

Thought: when someone shared something of value with you and benefit from it. You have a moral obligation to share it with others because someone in your friends list might be saved.

"Pieces of lemon in a glass of hot water can save you for the rest of your life," says Professor Chen Horin, chief executive of the Beijing Military Hospital.

Even if you are busy, you should look at this message and pass it on to others!

Hot lemons can kill cancer cells!

Cut the lemon into three pieces and place it in a cup, then pour hot water, it will become (alkaline water), drink it every day will certainly benefit everyone ..

Hot lemons can once again release an anti-cancer drug.

Hot lemon juice has an effect on cancerous tumors and

has shown treatment for all types of cancer.

Treatment with this extract will only destroy the malignant cells and will not affect healthy cells.

Second: The acids and mono-carboxylic acid in lemon juice can regulate hypertension and protect narrow arteries, adjust blood circulation and reduce blood clotting.

After reading, tell someone else and pass it on to someone you love and take care of your personal health.

Risk Of Pedophile Attack On Your Children

PLEASE DON’T TELL HIM!

“Mummy, if I tell you something will you tell Uncle Fidelis?”, came the voice of 5 year old Brenda as she stood near her mum in the kitchen. Mrs. Jide, Brenda’s mum looked at her daughter curiously, quietly dropped the knife she was using to cut vegetables and stooped down to be at eye level with the kid as she quizzed: “what is it you want to tell me, my angel?” Brenda replied, “Mummy promise me that you will not tell uncle Fidelis because he said that if I tell you a big dragon with two heads will appear when I am sleeping at night and swallow me.” The mum said, “My sweet angel, don’t you trust me? I won’t tell him, just tell me what that thing is.”

Little Brenda looked back and sideways as if to make sure that nobody was nearby then said in a low tone, “the other day you went out with Lara’s mummy, uncle Fidelis called me to his room and put one film for me to watch on his phone. While I was watching the film he told me to sit on his laps so that both of us would watch it together. As we were watching the film he put his finger under my skirt and started removing my pants. When I tried to remove his hand he told me to relax that he was not going to do anything bad to me. He said that he was only trying to help me understand what those people were doing in that film because very soon I will be a big girl. After some time, he asked me to lie down on the bed because those people were lying down on the bed. I lay down on the bed and he came to lie down beside me. Then he took the phone from me, dropped it on the table and told me to relax so that we could do what those people were doing. He removed my pants and put one of his fingers into my private part. At first it did not pain me but after some time it started paining me and I told him to stop but he refused. He then knelt down on the bed, unzipped his trouser, brought out his private part and asked me to start rubbing it with my hand. When I wanted to refuse, he said he will not be my friend again and that he will not help me to do my home work again. So I started rubbing his private part and after some time he pushed my legs apart and started putting his private part into my own private part. It pained me so much and I started screaming. Uncle Fidelis used one of his hands to cover my mouth and continued pressing me down on the bed. After some time he got up from the bed and started begging me to stop crying because I was crying seriously. He started rubbing my back and my legs that were paining me. He even went and bought ice cream for me. He then told me that I must not tell anybody otherwise a monster will come and kill me. He said that is what makes people big girls but those who don’t do it will remain small girls. He even told me that that was why Amanda, aunty Lizzy’s daughter died. Yesterday again when you and daddy went to church in the evening for the mid week service he did the same thing again. I asked him to buy ice cream for me but he refused. So I decided to tell you, but mu…”

At this juncture Mrs. Jide who was all the while listening to her daughter calmly could no longer control her emotions as she flew out of the kitchen shouting, “Fidelis! Fidelis!! Fide…!!!” The gateman rushed in and said, “Ma, Fidelis went to buy fuel. I hope there is no problem, ma?” Mrs. Jide, obviously shaking with rage screamed, “Tell that beast, in short no need talking.”
She swung back into the kitchen where little Brenda was in tears and pulled her out from back of the kitchen door where she had gone to hide and scolded her, “and you, come here and tell me everything that happened right now. Stop shedding tears because that is not going to solve any problem. I must get to the root of this matter.” Amid tears, Brenda said, “Mummy please don’t tell him!” “I don’t want any monster to come and kill me.” “Mummy pleeeeeaaaaase!” This was followed by more shouting and threatening from the mum who could no longer control her own tears. And so the commotion continued.

How did it end? Honestly I don’t know but your guess may just be as good as mine. But my concern is not how, when or where it ended. My concern is to let you know who Uncle Fidelis is.

Uncle Fidelis is Mrs. Brenda’s younger brother who has been living with the family for the past three years since he finished his youth service. Mr. Brenda helped him to secure a job in one of the engineering companies around their estate. The family trusted him so much that they didn’t bother themselves about anything once he was at home with the kids.

What did he do wrong? Nothing other than what every other pedophile knows how to do best. That is, stealing the virtue and destiny of innocent children.

But before addressing his issue let me tell you what Mrs. Brenda did wrong and the consequences of that wrong doing. She over reacted and these are the consequences of that mistake:
• Her daughter will never trust her again.
• The girl may never share any secret with her mother     again, neither now nor in the future.
• She missed the opportunity to find out from the girl every other thing that had transpired between her and Fidelis or with other members of the family. It is possible there were other things happening in the family among the other domestic servants and extended relatives living there.
• She had wounded the little girl emotionally and it will take the services of good therapists to get the picture off the innocent mind of the girl.

What should she have done?

• She shouldn’t have reacted so vehemently, no matter how bad the situation was. This is one of the things parents, especially mothers do that put a barrier between them and their children. Learn to be calm and composed when a child is telling you something. No matter how terrible what you heard from a child is, do not let your emotions betray you. Be the adult you are and be in control of the situation till you have got every fact you need. Even then, avoid explosive anger. It puts children off and stops them from telling you their secrets.
• She should have talked it over with the child and assured her that she is safe and that there is no monster anywhere coming to kill her before confronting the offender. That way the whole event would have been less traumatic for the kid.
• There was no need YET to shout and attract the attention of other people in the house. She should have cautiously investigated the matter to dig out every hidden thing before letting the cat out of the bag.

Back to Mr. Fidelis

Mr. Fidelis is a pedophile. And every pedophile is a thief and should be treated as such. I want to give you some facts you should know about pedophiles:
1. Pedophiles are on the increase today more than at any other time in history.
2. There are both male and female pedophiles.
3. They have no shame and have no conscience.
4. A pedophile does not know whether the victim is his daughter or her son. They are like dogs.
5. They are good pretenders. They can be doing one thing and the moment they see you coming they quickly change to another thing.
6. Most pedophiles are family members or other close acquaintances. Watch out who you have as your driver, house boy, house girl, nanny, home lesson teacher, that family friend you leave your kids with when you are away from home, your neighbour, colleague in your working place, etc. They are at times among family relatives, like in the case of Mr. Fidelis cited above.
7. They pretend to love their victim so much. They are the ones who take unusual interest in your child buying them gifts and always speaking good of them.
8. They work into your heart till you trust them so much that you won’t suspect them for anything.
9. They are not in haste. They take their time and work conscientiously till they win the trust of their victim.
10. They are full of ideas on how to get their target closer and closer till they strike.
11. When they succeed they are the ones that will tell the story of their conquest outside. They will carry the story of your family and your child for all to hear.
12. If they succeed once, it does not end there. They use blackmail, threat and subtle persuasions to hold their victims down and continue with their dirty acts till a major harm is done.
13. If they win the heart of your child, they will turn the child against you. They will make the child believe that you don’t care or that you don’t want them to grow up.
14. A pedophile has no inscription on the forehead to indicate that he or she is one.
15. They are like the devil; they don’t hear gentleman language.
16. If you choose to cover them they will do more harm. Expose them, give them no hiding place and they will cease from operating.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us all arise and fight against pedophiles. They are out to destroy our children and we must not let them. Terrifying stories of the activities of these evil beings keep coming up daily while parents are at ease assuming that their children are safe. I dare say that many parents are damn too carefree with their children.
Finally, empower your children; educate them about the activities of pedophiles. Tell them what to do if a pedophile comes near them. Be their friend so that they can tell you everything.

Leadership The Biggest Problem Of Education... OAU VC

*Leadership is education system’s biggest challenge, not funding –OAU VC*

TAIWO OJOYE
14 AUG 2018

Tare Youdeowei

The Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede, has said that the major challenges facing the education sector in Nigeria are lack of good leadership and improper utilisation of funds, not funding.

Speaking during the maiden annual lecture of the Rehoboth Dream Solid Foundation held last Thursday at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos and themed, ‘Public Education in the 21st Century: A Reappraisal of the Nigerian Education System since Independence’, Ogunbodede also proposed strategies for improving access to education in the country.

The vice-chancellor stressed the need for policies and strategic plans, accreditation of programmes, maintenance of regular academic calendar, strengthening of research and research policies in tertiary institutions, university-industry linkage, staff discipline, conflict resolution and work ethics, as well as university autonomy.

He said, “The problem of our education system is not entirely funding. Even when the funds are provided, the capacity to utilise them in a way that will advance education in this country is just not there. When you are the leader somewhere, do your best to ensure that you make a difference.

“Look at Nigeria, for example, we have people that we can point to as leaders who have actually changed the condition of their state or the condition of their local government. That is what every leader in the country should do. You cannot do everything, but the one that is within your capacity to do, do it well.”

Commenting on the general presumption that private universities would outshine public universities in the future, Ogunbodede said, “OAU, for instance, will be 50 years-old in 2021. You can’t compare that with a university that is just starting today.  Among the crème de la crème of the alumni that we have, we can boast over a 100,000 people who will contribute meaningfully to the university without feeling the pain.

“The private universities can never be a threat to the first or second generation universities. But then, the leadership of the public universities must begin to think and remember that if they fail to see the future, they may become the followers of tomorrow.”

The vice-chancellor also dismissed the claim that graduates of private universities have an advantage over their colleagues in public institutions in terms of employability. “I don’t think that is the case. However, we need to engage ourselves in a way that will change the curricula. What used to happen was that graduates were immediately employed by government after leaving the university. It’s a new development that graduates are no longer getting jobs, and that’s the challenge that we need to confront. The curricula need to reflect this change. So, it’s not an issue of being private or public, it has to do with the curricula that we are running in all our universities,” he said.

In her address, the co-founder of the RSDF, Mrs. Abimbola Komolafe, described the foundation as a non-profit, non-partisan and  non-governmental organisation engaged in charitable activities to advance the social and economic well-being of the less privileged through the promotion of sustainable education, mentoring and skills acquisition.

Komolafe said the foundation organised the annual lecture to provide a platform for informed debate. “It is the first in the series of annual lectures aimed at discussing topical issues that will contribute to the improvement of access to quality education in Nigeria. Through this forum, we hope to help build sustainable public education in Nigeria.

“The annual lectures will provide a platform for informed debate, independent analysis, and new policy ideas for feedback to relevant stakeholders,” she added.

Also, the foundation unveiled its 2018 Teachers’ Excellence Award during the event, which saw Mrs Felicia Olugo of Badore Communuity Junior Secondary School emerge best teacher in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State.

You Should Never Be Deterred... Chief Awolowo

AWOLOWO SPEAKS

*** Please read the letter below, by Chief Awolowo requesting for an education loan from Chief Timothy Adeola Odutola on March 25, 1943 , (the richest Ijebu man in those days) and promised to pay back by 1955. It is fascinating, long and interesting. ****

~ LETTER:

Dear Mr. Odutola,

I think it will be an exceeding saving of time and more business-like if I avoid all sweet preliminaries and go straight into the object of this letter and say that I am writing to ask you to be good enough to lend me a sum of £1,400 (One thousand and four hundred pounds) free of interest for twelve years.

It is a staggering figure! More staggering indeed does it become, when it is realized that I, who am asking for this loan, have nothing in all the world to give as a security for this money, excepting my good faith and my brains which again are of value only so long as I continue to breathe the breath of life!

Nevertheless, I here proceed to outline in brief why i want this big loan from you. And I hope you will be kind enough to sacrifice some time to go through what I have to say, even though, in  the end you might find yourself unable to do me this grand favour.

One great ambition of mine since my boyhood days is to be a lawyer, a politician and a journalist, rolled into one. I cherish politics and journalism as a career, and I desire advocacy as a means of livelihood. For you will agree with me that a politician or journalist who has no money with which to support himself and family comfortably, is like a blade which has no razor.

Now, at one time, I was on the verge of making enough money with which I could proceed to England in order to pursue the object of my ambition; but I suffered a twist in my fortune, and I crashed. Ever since, I have tried without success to recover lost grounds, financially. But spiritually and intellectually, I have made appreciable advance in spite of towering difficulties, all of which have now been surmounted.

As you are aware, I have just passed the intermediate Bachelor of Commerce Examination. Next year, I am taking the final B.Com. Having a degree is not my goal; I hate to be a government or mercantile employee. Otherwise, there are opportunities for me here and there to get a suitable and well paid job under government or one of the mercantile houses. As you know, however, once I become an employee of government or a mercantile establishment that is the end to my career as a politician and journalist. I have therefore resolved that under no circumstances will I take up such employment.

That is just by the way. I am now thirty-four years of age. After careful thought, I have come to the conclusion that if I could raise a loan free of interest sufficient to cover expenses, I should go to England, this year and within three years, I should qualify as a Barrister –at –law, and also obtain with Honours the LL.B Degree of London University. In addition this degrees apart from giving me good backing as a solicitor and Advocate will help me immensely as a politician and journalist.

But where on earth could i get the money? Who in Nigeria today could give £1,400 free of interest to help his fellow-man? J. Henry Doherty, Esq., of illustrious memory who did the like to many successful Nigerians is no more. But after meticulous, shifting and weighing, I hit upon you.

I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind that out of the bounty with which providence blesses your grit and efforts as a businessman, you can well easily afford to advance such a sum of money. I have no doubt too that as a young and progressive man you will be quite happy to give the money for the pursuit of the project for which I desire it.

But then, could you take this risk?

That is the question. As I have said before, I have no security for this loan. Moreover, I want it free of interest. So that you stand to gain absolutely NOTHING in the whole transaction, except the satisfaction that by helping me to achieve my ambition you are indirectly or even directly helping Nigeria or even Africa.

This risk becomes greater when it is borne in mind that I might die in the course of my studies or immediately after, so that, since I have no security or surety, you stand the chance of losing not only the money but also the satisfaction which you may cherish that you are contributing to the uplift of Africa. It is indeed a great risk; the greatest any man ever embarks upon.

But, this is a big BUT, if I live, as I have no doubt I will do, you will not only get your money back in full, but you will, to the end of your days, have cause to rejoice that you have done one of the most outstanding and most philanthropic acts any human being ever does. Among other things, I shall make excellent use of the money while in England by breaking records in my examination. On my return  to Nigeria, I shall strive to be one of the foremost advocates, politicians and writers in West Africa, and while I do all these, I shall make it a point not only to pay your money back in full, but also to repay your kindness and generosity towards me in every way I can.

All the same, it is a big risk! So, Sir, I like you to think seriously about it, and see if you can take it in the interest of a young man who has brain, industry and determination to back his ambition, but lacks the money. I know we have never been close friends, but I have a shrewd idea that you may take the risk and help me.

On this assumption, therefore, I proceed to the next and last stage of this letter.

I shall not require the whole £1,400 in a lump sum. To start with, you will help me pay a sum of £208-13s-3d to the Inner Temple. I have already received an application form from this Inn of Court; and from the details forwarded, I gather that the sum of £208-13s-3d will cover all the cost of training as a barrister, examination fees excluded.

When I am ready to sail, you will advance me a sum of £100 to cover passage, provision for my family and any other incidental expenses (NOTE: If I got torpedoed on the way, you would certainly lose this £100 but you will recover the £208-13s-3d).

At the same time you will remit to a London Bank the sum of £491-6s-9d. It is out of this amount that I shall pay the university fees for LL.B course and for special courses in political science and journalism, when I land in England. This is to say, the initial advance will total £800.

At the end of the first year, provided I make satisfactory progress in my studies, you will give instruction to the bank to honour all cheques from me drawn on this account. There will be an arrangement to be signed by me on my return.

On my return, I shall require TWO years within which to establish a solid practice and build a good reputation. After these two years, I should commence to pay at least £200 per annum either in monthly, quarterly or annual payments. So that in seven years after the first two years, I should pay back the whole sum of £1,400. That will be TWELVE YEARS from the time you help me to pay this in April or so this year, then I should be due to pay the whole of £1,400 by April 1955.

Now, as you yourself will see, this is the farthest limit within which I can pay the money. It may be possible for me to pay the money within THREE to FIVE years of my return. As a matter of fact, the sooner I pay it off, the better. But it is much better to be on the safe side in a matter like this. It is no making promises now which will be difficult to fulfil in future. On the contrary it is better to mention a period of twelve years and pay within SIX or EIGHT years than to mention FIVE YEARS and fail to pay within TEN years. Personally, I prefer that I should fail to get the loan under theses unattractive but sure conditions, rather than succeed in getting it under attractive but precarious conditions.

Now, this is all I have to say. You have my request before you, and the reason why i make the request. It is left for you to decide whether it is worthwhile to take the risk of helping me in the manner outlined above or not.

If you do me the great favour, not only myself and all that are mine, but also God and Africa will be grateful, I shall have no cause whatsoever to grumble or to blame you, FOR THE RISK IS GREAT.

Since this is a very selfish request, I enclosed herewith a self addressed stamped envelope to be sent under a registered post.

Obafemi Awolowo.

Merciful God!

* Chief Odutola refused him of the Loan, Awo could not travel that year. He buckle up his lace and by August 14, 1944 (one year later) he travelled to England, became a Barrister at law and was called to the Bar in November 1946. Amazingly, by 1954 (A year to the time he promised to pay Chief Odutola the Loan ) , Chief Awolowo was already a Premier in the Defunct Western Region and already giving out Scholarship to over 200 undergraduates (First of its kind in Africa).

I find it a great pleasure, to replicate the full version of the Awoistic dedicatory letter, following a stiff request by friends that the Nigerian Youths need to see and digest
