Teachers Protest Inhumane Treatment By WAEC And NECO Examination Bodies

*URGENT ALERT FOR THE BOYCOTT OF SUPERVISION, COORDINATION AND GRADING OF SCRIPTS FOR BOTH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL EXAMINATION IN WEST AFRICAN EXAMINATION COUNCIL (WAEC)/NATIONAL EXAMINATION COUNCIL (NECO) IN OGUN STATE*

Teachers are models, they are moulders and builders of lives and destinies. Many people have passed through their hands and have risen up to greater heights. They, therefore, need to be cherished and respected being major stakeholders in education industry.

Over the years, the way the examination bodies such as West African Examination Council *(WAEC)* and National Examination Council *(NECO)* treat teachers who have proved to be of great assistance to them by serving as examiners and supervisors in all their scheduled examinations (Internal and External), calls for urgent attention of other stakeholders in education.

In the on going West African Senior School Certificate Examination *(WASSCE)* in Ogun State, the Press Unit of our Union reported the various *inhuman treatments* melted out to various supervisors at different centres across the state.

In one of the reports, a teacher named *Mrs Abosede Funmilayo Obiyomi-Akinleye* from Sango Ota High School (Senior) slumped while on call duty of WAEC as a supervisor at a centre (The Crescent International School) in Ota on Monday 13th May, 2019. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital where she spent two days after which she was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta on Wednesday 15th May, 2019 where, after defying all medical interventions, eventually died on Saturday May 18th, 2019. Although she did not die at the venue of the examination, her death was obviously a cumulative effect of the stress and trauma of the tedious examination supervision. *Surprisingly, the WAEC officials neither show any sign of sympathy nor concern with the family of the deceased or the school by calling or deeming it fit to visit, but rather, she was immediately replaced by another supervisor right at the custodian point (Ota 3).* It took the fellow supervisors to contribute money which they used to rush her to the nearest hospital. This attitude of the WAEC spoke volume of the reputation of the body and of their staff. *It simply shows that the body (WAEC) has no regard for lives but values their examination more than the teachers assisting them in doing the job as supervisors.* This is not only wicked but inhuman on their part.

There was another case of one of our teacher, *Mr Wasiu Gbolahan* from Egba Owode Grammar School (Senior), who was locked up between Friday May 17th and May 20th, 2019 due to leakage of questions screenshot by one of the candidates in the examination hall and posted online. Rather than conducting a proper investigation on how the students brought handset into the examination hall or interrogating the candidate and the school invigilators, the said teacher was arrested and abandoned at a Police Station. If not for the efforts of the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Teaching Service Commission, Principals in the zone and Union officials who rose up to the challenge, the teacher would not have regained his freedom up till now for an offence he did not commit. Despite the fact that he is a Muslim, who was also fasting, he spent three days in the  police custody. Kudos to Obafemi/Owode Zonal Principals, Zonal Education Officer and Zonal Secretary, Teaching Service Commission who made frantic efforts in ensuring the teacher was granted bail. Meanwhile, the erring candidate and the invigilators were left alone as free persons. *We frown at this injustice and dehumanisation.* At the same time, we view it as an  embarrassment to the teaching profession.

In another development, a teacher from Ibafo Community High School, (Senior) - *Mrs Abosede Olubunmi Adelaja* was involved in a fatal accident on her way to administer the second paper at a Centre on Monday, 20th May, 2019. The woman was rescued by the Ibafo police officers and other public spirited Nigerians. She was initially moved to a private hospital in Ibafo and later taken to General Hospital Ikeja. In their usual manner, *the WAEC's sympathy was towards their green packs, rather than the health of the supervisor.* She was left in a critical condition at the hospital unattended to by the WAEC. It was after the social media alert on the issue by the Union that the examination body through the State Branch Controller visited the woman in question and gave her a token.

While we appreciate the visit, we observed that the response was not prompt enough and was only done because there was dust raising from some quarters. *It further goes to confirm that the examination body was not interested in the safety of the life of the supervisor but in their question papers alone.*

We make bold to say that teachers are not second class citizens. They are men and women of integrity that must be accorded respect. It must be mentioned that majority of those who are engaged to do these jobs  are senior teachers in their respective schools.

*It has now come to the point where serious appeal is sounded to our colleagues to stop risking their lives through unnecessary agitation/lobbying/scheming for an opportunity to be appointed as WAEC/NECO supervisors and examiners during marking exercise.* It is shocking and disgusting to see teachers struggling to gatecrash as examiners at marking centres or lobbying officials to be appointed as supervisors despite the poor pay they receive when compared to the stress involved. *Of what importance is the money paid for the work done that fails to measure up with the rigours and untold hardship suffered in the course of discharging the duties?*

Most of our colleagues often breakdown after the exercise. Some suffer health challenges because of sleepless night. It is the value we place on ourselves and profession that these  examination bodies will place on us. No wonder why they now see us as individuals who cannot survive without their stipend and this makes them treat us without any regard. *It is high time the personnel of these examination bodies were left to handle their examinations by themselves.* It is disturbing to see a supervisor being paid  less than twenty thousand naira after running up and down for a month in spite of all the hazards or a graduate of Chemistry of over twenty years, who stands as Assistant Examiner being paid ten thousand naira for marking over 300 scripts, when their own personnels are always handsomely rewarded.

*It is worse if you as an examiner is found to have lost a script.* That day, you will be  treated as a common criminal. This is an eyesore. It is the greatest level of injustice and inhuman treatment.

In time past, teachers were the ad hoc staff for all electoral processes in the country. When the service was withdrawn from us, heaven did not fall. We, instead, became stronger and better in the society. Why not learn to treat ourselves with respect and  honour.

*To all examination bodies, if we do not see reasonable improvement in remunerations and welfare packages for our colleagues, we shall be forced to direct all our teachers to boycott both supervision of exams and marking of scripts in Ogun State and even begin a nationwide campaign, enlightenment and advocacy against such undignified duties.*

At several fora, this union has called for the review of remunerations for supervisors and examiners but up till now, nothing definite has been done.

We also note with dismay that the personnel of these bodies who are just to assist the supervisors and examiners in getting their jobs done without hitches are well treated anytime they go out for this exercise. *They are well paid with mouth-watering sums for their inconveniences.* They are always lodged in good hotels during the periods the exercises last, yet examiners and supervisors are poorly paid and treated with disdain because of the notion that teachers are participating in supervision and marking of scripts not because of what they want to get as remunerations but for the passion they have for teaching as teachers and educationists. What a hell?

The bodies *(WAEC and NECO)* continue to rake in trillions of naira annually by way of examination fees from candidates but they continue *to pay paltry sums to examiners and supervisors *who are ad hoc staff under the pretext that they are not after gratification, knowing full well that they are not entitled to any benefit under their organisation and the job is not an employment opportunity that can be quoted in the curriculum vitae as a working experience.*

This dehumanisation must stop as we cannot fold our hands and allow our teachers to be treated unjustly again. *Our teachers' lives matter  to us more than anything else.*

The Union is poised to see if there will be any changes and is resolute to liaise with relevant agencies and stakeholders on this issue. Enough is enough!

Thank you.

Solidarity!

Forward Ever!

Backward Never!

How A Teacher Can Improve Students Memory

5 Things Teachers Can Do To Improve Students' Memory

Improving students memory is one of the important tasks that teachers must embark on to aid the success of their students and make the transfer of knowledge easy. Good memories ensure that students retain the lessons you teach them and you can enhance this by:

- Using imagery to explain and illustrate your lessons.

- Encourage students to spend time to relax and rest. Observing siesta is a good idea.

- Do not present information in large  chunk; break lessons and information into smaller units.

- Encourage students to eat healthy diet. Suggest memory-improving foods.

- Play classroom games that involves recollecting.

Fight For Your PHCN Right A Case study

HOW TO LOWER YOUR PHCN BILL...,

IF WE DON'T DO IT OURSELVES, NO ONE WE DO IT FOR US.

IGNORANCE IS NEVER AN EXCUSE IN THE COURT OF LAW, PLS BE ENLIGHTENED.

THIS IS NOT A JOKE, PLS READ TO END.

A thread on why PREPAID METER being distributed TO ALL may never be achieved in Nigeria.
After the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Electricity distribution companies are next on the list of corruption. This has been in existence from time immemorial, just like barracks, many government have come and gone but the deep rooted corruption in the system remains the same.
In April 2016, I moved in to my current rented apartment. The apartment was still connected to an odistribution there was an outstanding payment of about N385,000.00 to be paid.

ARE U FACING THE SAME CHALLENGE?
PLS COME ALONG WITH ME.

This wasn't revealed to me before I made payment of the rent, as usual (that's how they all do)
This became a worry and an absolute headache.

I asked the landlord why it was so and she made me understand that the apartment was not in use for 5years.

I asked how come it wasn't reported to NEPA so they'd stop the billing, she gave me a copy of the letter she wrote to them
So I took the matter up, wrote several mails to Eko electricity company and the matter was on for 11months, note that in the space of this 11 months, I never got a monthly bill lesser than 24,000.00

You want to ask if I have a factory in my apartment? No I don't.
So it extended from wanting the company to zerorize the ridiculous outstanding balance in the billing account to fighting and contesting the outrageous billing system which do not in any way represent my true electricity consumption and wanting a Prepaid Meter

The battle began.
After several exchange of mails betweens myself and Eko Electric and no solution was forthcoming, I moved the matter to NERC, the regulatory body for all electricity distribution companies in Nigeria.

I filed a petition against Ekedp and the undertaking in charge of my area.
Lo and behold, after three days from the petition submission to NERC, I got a call from the marketing manager for my area pleading for me to make myself available to allow them come to my house and take inventory of the electrical appliances I use.

NERC is working yeah? Right.
A staff of the Ekedp came to take the inventory and at the end of the computations, we calculated and multiplied each appliance by the estimated units they consume per day and multiplied by 31days.

Recall I said I never got a bill less than 24k in a month?
Then we arrived at a figure that even the Eko electric staff who came to take the inventory opened his mouth and couldn't close it.

What I should be billed based on having 24hour light per day(which is not even possible) in 31 days was 4,800.00

I almost ran mad.
I took a copy of the report, scanned it and attached it to my next petition to NERC.

At this point, the marketing manager attached to my undertaking had started calling and begging me to stop the petitions.

That they could all get sacked if matters gets escalated further.
Then in September 2017, after all the troubles and how I never got tired if pursuing the issue, I got a mail from Eko electricity to come with some required documents in order to fill a form for a PREPAID METER.

I went there and did as they requested

At Last.
On 27 November 2017, I was on leave.
I was at my gate then this Alfa looking guy was parading and trying to see house number on the fence. My instinct told me to ask if he was asking for Ayo, then he said yes

He was the prepaid meter installer, he was with my new prepaid meter
I also recall that before the whole issue started, I was discouraged severally that I can never be given prepaid meter due to the outstanding balance on the billing account, I paid no mind to all the people that said that and went ahead with my case.
I got the Prepaid meter for FREE. After a week, bill was brought and boom, outstanding balance has been cleared from 385,000.00 to zero balance.

How did I achieve this?
I mean I didn't pay a dime to anyone and I never for once bribed my way in all my dealings.
I achieved this simply because;

1. I knew my right.
2. I wouldn't settle for mediocrity
3. I never stopped pushing even after several months and it seemed unachievable
4. I was ready to take the matter up anywhere
5. I was informed.
Now imagine how many people are out there who don't even know how to go about such tedious and draining process.

I learnt that a lot of people even paid as much as 40k to get the prepaid meter. Something that's supposed to be free.
Since the prepaid meter was installed in November 27 2017, I have not exhausted the 303 units that came with it which is calculated to be 7,200.00

And I still have 140units left to use.

That's over four (4) months now
Do you now see why these people will never allow dream of every homes having a prepaid meter become a reality?

Because such development will block all holes where the electricity distribution corrupt members of staff perpetrate their fraudulent activities and corruption from.
They know that they will be forced to give light more in order to generate revenue and will not be able to charge people outrageously as they are currently doing and remitting the proceeds of their criminal act to their pockets.

Stand up and Fight for what is your right.
Prepaid meter is your right, fight for it to the letter.

If you believe that your monthly electricity bill do not represent your consumption, make a case.

If you're in Lagos, Ikeja Electricity company and Eko electricity company are there for you.

If they fail, involve NERC.
That will be all, for now.
Due to popular demand, these are the email addresses you can forward your complaints to -
Ikeja Electricity Distribution - customercare@ikejaelectric.com
Eko Electricity Distribution - customercare@ekedp.com
Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission - complaints@nerc.gov.ng

Do you know that, by law, you are entitled to at least 14 days between the date you receive your Electricity bill and the date when you are to pay that bill?

Do you know that, by law, your Electricity Distribution Company must give you a written notice of disconnection before it can disconnect you for non-payment of your bill?

If you answered yes to the last question, then do you know that, by law, your Electricity Distribution Company must wait for at least 90 days from the date of giving you notice of disconnection, before it can legally disconnect you?

Do you know that if you are unlawfully disconnected, you can compel your distribution company to reconnect you without paying reconnection fee, and that you can get this done without going to court?

Do you know that, if you are illegally disconnected, you are entitled to damages at a minimum of #1,000 per day to be paid by your Electricity Distribution Company for each day of disconnection till your power is restored?

Do you know that there is an administrative body that meets in your city, or a city close to you, that monitors the activities of Electricity Distribution Companies and will compel them to respect your rights if they breach same?

If you answered NO to any of these questions, then you, like so many others, are the victim of a conspiracy of silence by the Electricity distribution companies, who have been statutorily mandated to carry out regular public awareness campaigns on these and other consumer rights within their franchise area.

There is a solution at hand.

An online platform has been created to educate power consumers of their rights under the reformed power sector in Nigeria. Not only that, if you have suffered from any breach of your rights, you can get *free help* on that platform to enforce your rights.

Go to www.nepawahala.ng.

Register. Ask any question that bothers you. Ask for help. It's all free.

Go to www.nepawahala.ng.

One candle loses nothing by lighting another. It only spreads light and pushes back this present darkness.

If you have suffered from a breach of your rights as a power consumer, chances are someone you know has been, or is, a victim too.

Light up a candle now. Push back the darkness of corruption in our NATION today by forwarding this message to all the people on ur contact.
THE CHANGE BEGINS WITH YOU AND I.
TAKE ACTION NOW!!!

Some Don't For Teachers

*10 Great Don't for teachers/lecturers*

1....Don’t send a student away from your class during lesson as a result of bad behaviour.

You cannot account for what the child is doing outside and this gonna work against you if a major incident happens.

2....Don’t touch a child physically especially in sec schools.

If the child claims you touched his/her private parts, you cannot deny it.

3...Don’t give assignment you know you won’t have time to mark.

Unmarked assignments in your students’ notes show that you are incompetent and unprofessional.

4....Don’t use your school internet to send private and confidential emails.

They can be tracked by school management ICT dept.

5.... Don’t just teach only within the periods given to you if you are preparing students (SS3 and JS3 for external examinations.

Create more contact time for your students.

6....Don’t stay with a student alone in a class , lab, office etc.
Child protection policy forbids it.
Avoid “one corner” teaching.

7....Don’t ask a child to kneel down for too long a time.

He or she might have had kneel surgery or serious dislocation which you do not know hitherto.

8.... Don’t conspire against your line manager(HOD,,,Academic heads et al)

9.... Don't be a difficult looking educator, neither should you transfer aggression on any learner, pocket your personal problem and always be full of live!

10.... Don’t treat students unequally.

There should be nothing like your favourite students.

Every child matters.

Activism And Academic Excellence A Case Study

I was privileged to be a speaker at a Career Day seminar for some senior secondary school students in Lagos few weeks ago. After the events few of the students approached me to share with them how I was able to combine my student activism with my academic performance. I shared the following story with them.
As a secondary student of Community High School,  Nanka Orumba North LGA of Anambra State, I was obviously quite brilliant, and I maintained first position right from JSS 1 to SSS3, with good grades in WAEC and NECO from 1994-2000. I was also the class monitor/prefect from JSS 1 to SSS 2 before I became the school regulator and later social prefect
I would always collect the scheme of work from all teachers of different subjects and read ahead of the topics. Infact I loved challenging and preempting teachers during classes. I read every night between 1-3am as much as I could. So I always equipped myself academically in the night. My benefactors Revd Walter Ezeilo and Mrs Julie Ezeilo were seasoned academics. Infact Ezeilo family could be called the most educated family in Nanka till date with many professors and host of professionals. I was privileged to live with such people. My aunty Mrs Julie Ezeilo(nee Ifionu) was a school principal,  assistant aguata zonal supervising principal of the whole aguata educational zone of Orumba North/south and Aguata LGA between 1992-2000. So I had cover and backbone.
My student activism was purely to improve learning standard and was climaxed below.
On September 1999, our physics teacher was transfered to Igbo Ukwu,  and a new one was supposed to come from CSS Isuofia. Our principal released ours to Igbo Ukwu but the Isuofia teacher refused to come up till November, and we would write WAEC by May 2000.
I led a delegation to the principal and all our pleas amounted to nothing.
On November I,  organized the science students,  we marched to CSS isuofia,  I went into their staff room while my colleague were down stairs,  I was directed to SSS 3class where the lady was teaching. I confronted her, she came out of her class, after listening to me,  she walked out on me imagine a small boy like me. As I was coming downstairs,  I noticed some students of CSS Isuofia led by there senior prefect had rounded by team obviously to attack us for having the audacity to confront their teacher. Fortunately,  I knew all their SSS 3 students and all their senior prefects,  because I partially did 2months of JSS 1 CSS isuofia in 1994 before CHS Nanka was made community. I was also a class monitor before I left isuofia. I would have been one of the prefects if I had continued at Isuofia. So I was able to handle that scene.
Immediately, we left isuofia to Ekwulobia Girls High school through a back road. We all trekked and walk these distances. Ekwulobia Girls houses the Zonal education office of Aguata, Orumba North and South.
The Chief supervising principal was said to be in a meeting. I suggested we go to Awka to see either Barr Chucks Nsobundu the then Chairman, Anambra State education commission or we have audience with Gov Chinwoke Mbadinuju who had earlier declared free education. We had limitation of transport fare to Awka. I was the team lead. As we were still discussing, my aunty Mrs Ezeilo  walked passed us and saw me. She was like what brought you here,  did you tell me before we all left house this morning. I became terrified,  but I summed courage and explained our mission to her. She was furious but chided me that I never discussed such with her. She asked us to go back to our school. Before we got back same day, news has gone round the school that I led students to Awka to see the Governor.
Our principal then,  Mr Akunyili threatened to suspend me from school and stop me from registering WAEC,  he called me a gang leader.
When I came home, I cried and reported to my aunty. She too was annoyed with me for not discussing the issue with her even when I lived and ate in her house. She drove me to school the next day and the principal was surprised that I had such a big personality as my guardian. The threats and scheduled punishment for my science students ended immediately. The next day, I was in the library,  a junior student ran to me that a new teacher is calling me at the Chemistry laboratory. On getting there,  I saw the physics teacher I had confronted at isuofia 2 days ago. She had obviously resumed as our new physics teacher and she was good in the subject. We joked about what happened and we became best of friends.
There were equally some other activism I was involved in.
I was equally stubborn and bullish. Sometimes,  I will engage in flogging spree from JSS 1 to SSS 2, in the name of flogging noise makers,  those that wore slippers, and those not properly dressed. In some occasions,  fight would ensue between sss3 boys  and SSS 2 boys because of seniority.
Nevertheless,  I balanced all equations between activism, academic and some stubborn exuberances.
I later advised the students to put academic first and balance other equations. If they fail there academic,  there activism would not make sense.
Such was my little knowledge.

JAMB DELISTS 76 FRAUDULENT EXAM CENTERS

(1) (2) (Reply) (Follow(Go Down)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB has has delisted 76 exam centres and has also appointed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria to prosecute about 100 persons allegedly involved in various malpractices during the UTME that held between April 11 and 18. The 76 Computer-Based Test Centres were delisted for various infractions during the recently concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, raising fears that results from those centres may be cancelled.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, who confirmed that 76 exam centres across the cross were delisted on Friday in Abuja, also revealed that no fewer than 100 UTME candidates were arrested nationwide by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the police. Speaking on ‘Admissions into tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria’ at the 23rd annual seminar of the Nigerian Academy of Education, revealed that professional writers hid in toilets and later replaced the UTME candidates who pretended they  went to the toilet to ease themselves.

Though Oloyode did not name the SAN leading the prosecution reportedly for security reasons
