The negative
impact of the use of handsets by secondary school
children was a major issue discussed at a one day forum organised
in Lagos recently.
The event which
was organised by King Emmanuel Progressive College Ayobo,
aimed at improving the learning skills of the school children. Speaking at the event, the Proprietor
of the college, Dr. Anthony Baiyewu
urged parents and guardians to ensure strict monitoring of the use of
handsets by their wards so as to enable them concentrate on
their studies..
Dr. Baiyewu regretted that the advent of Information
Technology (IT) including handsets is gradually eroding the standard
of education and added that if the use of handsets by students is not checkmated
it will negatively affect their academic life.
According to him, some
students spend most of their time searching for information in the handsets that will
not be of any good use to them instead of studying their books.
In his words: ‘’The
standard of education is negatively affected by Information Technology.
The SMS languages is fast eroding the standard of
spoken and written English . There should be strict monitoring if not a
total ban on the use of handsets by students in the secondary school.’’
He frowned at parents
who blame teachers for their children’s poor performance
instead of taking time to monitor the activities of their
children.
In his words: ‘’ some
parents do not visit their children in
the school and they do not have time to
check their books rather they are busy running up and down for money. They should make out time to
visit their wards in the school and ask question from the teachers about their children’s academic performance’’, he added.
Speaking also at the
event, Pastor Ade
Haasstrup
advised parents to see the good up bring of their children as a challenge and added that they should
not allow business and struggle in life to take their due
responsibility.
‘’Children training
and education starts from the home where parents have to posses the
ability to impact moral discipline by showing good
examples, guide and adequately instruct to give room for
uprightness.
‘’Also, the home is
the pillar ground to build our children’s confidence so that
they can
overcome challenges of life, ’’he added.
On the other hand, he
stressed the need for teachers to have a close relationship with their students
so as to impact them positively .
He said :
‘’ It should be noted that youths and
children came from various home and are
bred by different parents and they hold teachers in
high esteem for the sake of their children.
‘’Teachers are
to study, examine and maintain a close relationship with
students so as to impact the right skills of knowledge in to
them,’’
Continuing, he
advised teachers to learn how to manage their personality and added that
they should manage their appearance, temper, emotion, homes , family and
comportment.
Talking about moral
education, he said it is necessary particularly at this time when moral
decadence is evident in children both in primary and secondary
schools.
‘’The easiest way to
mend bad habits is by training and emphasis on religion and moral
instructions to pupils.
‘’The best pupil
in the school subjects could develop to be delinquents in
moral standards. They could be good engineers, scientists,
administrators, accountants and even teachers’’.
Emphasising on
teachers performance, he said, it is ideal to examine them from time to
time.
‘’ Teachers should
attend training and seminar workshops so that they will not run dry of facts,
information and knowledge. Teaching is a good profession because it
moulds life and lay concrete foundation upon which students
life are built, empowering them to capture the vast opportunities
this world has to offer with the knowledge and the attitudinal
changes acquired in the school setting’’.
